Where are Lebanon-Israel talks heading?
12:37 AM
Paul Hefel-James

After a third round of US-brokered talks in Washington, Lebanese and Israeli delegations on Friday agreed to a 45-day extension of the 16 April ceasefire, setting the stage for future negotiations along security and political tracks.

Former ambassador Simon Karam led the Lebanese negotiating team opposite Israeli ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter.

Both parties, for the first time, included military officials in addition to other deputies, and State Department counsellor Michael Needham replaced US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the latter accompanying President Donald Trump on his visit to China.

The talks are fraught with stumbling blocks on all sides, from Israel’s intransigence to Lebanon's fragmented approach and the US administration's inability to mediate as a neutral party.

Despite Trump and Rubio personally backing the early talks, the framing of the negotiations has drawn criticism. "The practical upshot is humiliating Lebanon's authorities and failing to deliver a real ceasefire in exchange," Sam Heller, fellow at Century International, told The New Arab.

Airbus seeks to cut peripheral expenses due to Iran war

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

European aviation giant Airbus has asked its teams to cut "non-essential expenses" by 10 percent due to turbulence following the Middle East war, according to a document seen by AFP.

"We are asking for your support in adopting several cost containment measures to help our company navigate this unstable situation," it said.

"Our specific focus is on significantly pausing all activities and costs that are not strictly essential to our industrial activities and operations ... We aim to reduce these costs by -10 percent compared to the 2025 baseline."

Airbus, contacted by AFP, declined to comment.

The memo asked teams not to "engage in any new expenses or any subcontracting activities that are not strictly essential", singling out "team events, team boosters, corporate events, events for other stakeholders, and participation in conferences and events".

It also asked teams not to enter into new agreements or activities, and to cut travel costs.

Bessent urges more disruption to Iran's financing
11:20 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday called on allies to more forcefully disrupt Iran's financing networks and said the Treasury would scrub its sanctions list of outdated designations to make it easier for financial institutions to root out the most sophisticated terrorist financing schemes.

Bessent told an anti-terrorism financing conference after G7 finance leaders met in Paris that participants needed to "stand with us in full measure" against Iran.

"That will require, for example, our European partners to join the United States in taking action against Iran by designating its financiers, unmasking its shell and front companies, shuttering its bank branches, and dismantling its proxies," Bessent said. "It will require those of you in the Middle East and Asia to root out Iran's shadow banking networks."

Bessent told Reuters in an interview that Iranian bank branches in Europe were not taking deposits but "that branch manager is doing something. Just close it."

His comments came as the Treasury imposed fresh sanctions on Iran's shadow tanker fleet and an Iranian foreign currency exchange house and what called other front companies.

US seized Iran-linked oil tanker in the Indian ocean

The US seized an Iran-linked oil tanker in the Indian Ocean overnight, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing three US officials.

The tanker, known as the Skywave, was sanctioned by the US in March for its role in transporting Iranian oil and was likely loaded with more than a million barrels of crude at Iran's Kharg Island in February, the report said.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report.

Several vessels have been seized by the US since the start of the ceasefire with Iran as it implements a blockade on Iranian ports in response to Iran's own blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The future of Fatah: What next for the Palestinian movement?
7:43 PM
Sally Ibrahim
Gaza

As Israel's war on Gaza stretches into an open-ended phase of destruction, and the threat of annexation looms in the occupied West Bank, Fatah convened its eighth General Conference at a time of intense significance for Palestinian politics.

The gathering unfolded not only under the shadow of war, but also amid the accumulated pressures weighing on a political system that has steadily eroded over the past two decades, leaving it geographically fragmented, politically divided, and increasingly disconnected from its social base.

What was officially presented as a milestone of internal democratic renewal quickly evolved into a broader political indicator: a test of Fatah's ability to reproduce its leadership under conditions of extreme crisis.

It was also a measure of whether the Palestinian Authority (PA) - long dominated by the movement - can still project institutional continuity in the absence of national elections, unified representative bodies, or a functioning political horizon.

Vance says Iran talks held in 'good faith'
7:16 PM
The New Arab Staff

US Vice President JD Vance has told a press conference at the White House that talks with Iran are being held "in good faith", but that military options are still on the table.

"The president has asked us to negotiate in good faith and that's exactly what we've done," he said, adding that "we think that we've made a lot of progress. We think the Iranians want to make a deal."

He also said that military options were still on the table, however, which he called "option B".

"But that's not what the president wants and I don't think it's what the Iranians want either."

He went on to reiterate that the US's main concern was about Iran's ability to obtain a nuclear weapon, saying, "we want to keep the number of countries that have nuclear weapons small, and that's why Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon."

Iran has always denied that its nuclear programme was military, saying that it's focused on civilian power and research applications.

"He obviously does not care about the mediation of the Persian Gulf state heads," he continued, saying "power is the only language he understands."

Hamas rejects Board of Peace report on stalling Gaza truce
6:25 PM
The New Arab Staff

Hamas has rejected a report by Trump's Board of Peace to the UN Security Council regarding delays in implementing the Gaza Strip roadmap and saying that its failure to disarm was the "principal obstacle" to full implementation of a ceasefire brokered last October.

It said that the report contained "misrepresentations" and adopted the Israeli narrative on the movement's weapons and governance of Gaza.

In a press statement issued Tuesday, the movement said the report ignored Israel's failure to uphold its commitments under the ceasefire agreement, as well as its continued closure of border crossings and prevention of the entry of reconstruction materials.

Israel has killed at least 880 people in near-daily deadly airstrikes on Gaza since the ceasefire came into effect.

However, the Board of Peace said in its report that "the principal obstacle to full implementation (of the ceasefire) remains Hamas’ refusal to accept verified decommissioning, relinquish coercive control, and permit a genuine civilian transition in Gaza".

UN expert condemns torture of Palestinians in Israeli jails
5:56 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

A United Nations expert on Tuesday raised alarm over the alleged "torture" of Palestinian prisoners and "potentially unlawful deaths" in Israeli prisons since October 2023.

The comments come as Israel faces growing scrutiny over detention conditions of Palestinian detainees during the Gaza war.

"Emergency measures introduced after 7 October 2023 exposed Palestinian detainees to torture, potentially unlawful deaths, incommunicado detention, and degrading conditions," said Alice Jill Edwards, the UN special rapporteur on torture.

Quoted in a UN statement seen by AFP, she argued the "number and cruelty of allegations" point to a "gross disregard by Israel of its duty to treat all detainees humanely".

Edwards said she had gathered information on 52 cases involving various forms of torture or ill-treatment, as well as 33 cases of sexual torture and other forms of sexual abuse.

Reported abuses include "severe beatings, stress positions, excessive restraints, electrocution, sleep deprivation, malnutrition and starvation" among many others.

She also expressed concern over reports of at least 94 deaths in custody since October 2023 that had not been investigated.

Somaliland says it will open an embassy in Jerusalem
5:43 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, will set up an embassy in Jerusalem soon, its ambassador said on Tuesday, after Israel became the first country to formally recognise the self-declared republic  several months ago.

In turn, Israel is expected to set up an embassy in Somaliland's capital Hargeisa, Ambassador Mohamed Hagi said in a post on X.

Israel recognised Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state in December, a move Somalia rejected and termed a "deliberate attack" on its sovereignty.

Somaliland has enjoyed effective autonomy - and relative peace and stability - since 1991, when Somalia descended into civil war, but the breakaway region had until December failed to receive recognition from any other country.

The former British protectorate hopes that recognition by Israel will encourage other nations to follow suit, increasing its diplomatic heft and access to international markets.

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Tuesday that the opening of the embassy in Jerusalem would be another significant step in strengthening relations with Somaliland. Once opened, the Somaliland embassy would be the eighth embassy in Jerusalem, he said.

UAE says drones targeting nuclear plant came from Iraq
5:16 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The United Arab Emirates on Tuesday said drones that targeted its nuclear plant last week came from Iraq, from where Iranian-backed groups have launched several attacks since the Middle East war began.

On Sunday, an unclaimed drone struck an electrical generator near the Arab world's only nuclear power plant in Barakah in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, triggering a fire but causing no injuries or radiation leak. Two other drones had been intercepted.

Barakah is near the Saudi border and Qatar and the strike raised fears of consequences across the Gulf.

"As part of the ongoing investigation into the blatant attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant on May 17, 2026, technical tracking and monitoring confirmed that the three drones... all originated from Iraqi territory," the Emirati defence ministry said.

Authorities intercepted six drones that also came from Iraq and "attempted to target civilian and vital areas" in the past 48 hours, the ministry added.

Iraqi authorities had already condemned the attack on Barakah before Abu Dhabi announced where the drones came from.

Iran has attacked the UAE and other Gulf nations since the US and Israel launched strikes on the country on 28 February, targeting US assets but also energy and civilian infrastructure.

Before the 8 April ceasefire came into place, Tehran-backed Iraqi groups intervened in support of Iran and struck US facilities in Iraq and the wider region, including Gulf countries.

NATO commander 'thinking about' role in Strait of Hormuz
5:01 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

NATO's top commander said Tuesday he was "thinking" about how the alliance could help in the Strait of Hormuz, but no formal planning had begun yet.

"Am I thinking about it? Absolutely. But there's no planning yet until the political decision is taken," US General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, told journalists.

US President Donald Trump has blasted Washington's European allies in NATO for their response to his war on Iran -- which has seen the crucial waterway closed.

European countries spearheaded by Britain and France have been scrambling to put together a possible plan for how they could help keep the strait open if the war ends.

So far US-led alliance NATO has steered clear of seeking any direct involvement in the conflict -- despite pressure from Trump.

"Each nation is considering their response, with many, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, sailing ships to the region," Grynkewich said.

"We all agree it's in our interest to ensure freedom of navigation in international waters."

Israeli army renews displacement threats in south Lebanon
4:45 PM
The New Arab Staff

The Israeli military has renewed forced displacement threats targeting residents across southern Lebanon, warning people in 12 towns and villages to leave their homes ahead of announced attacks.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Israeli army Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee named the affected areas as Toura, Lower Nabatieh, Habboush, Al-Bazouriyeh, Tayr Debba, Kafr Huna, Ain Qana, Lubaya, Jibshit, Al-Shahabiyeh, Burj Al-Shamali and Houmin Al-Fawqa.

The warning comes as Israel continues carrying out strikes and military attacks across Lebanon despite the ceasefire agreement that came into effect last month.

Lebanese officials and residents have repeatedly accused Israel of violating the truce through air strikes, artillery shelling and drone attacks targeting multiple areas in the country’s south.

They called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and for maintaining pressure on Russia over Ukraine, agreeing on a common language on issues on which the group of seven advanced economies have not always seen eye to eye.

Iran reopened its stock exchange on Tuesday after the longest shutdown in its history, caused by the US-Israeli war, according to local media.

"After nearly 80 days ... the Tehran Stock Exchange reopened this morning," the economic daily Donya-e-Eqtesad reported.

Trading had been suspended since the start of the war on 28 February, when Israeli and US forces attacked Iran, triggering retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran across the region.

The market remained closed even after a fragile ceasefire took effect on 8 April.

Unlike major global exchanges, Iran's stock market operates largely outside the international financial system due to decades of sanctions and restrictions on foreign investment.

The official IRNA news agency said trading in shares in more than 40 companies affected by war, including firms in the chemical and metal sectors, "will remain suspended for the time being".

It added that "many Israeli military operations are not carried out during daytime hours," for fear of the drones.

To confront the escalating danger of those drones, the authority said, "countermeasures are being distributed to a limited number of soldiers in each company, due to a shortage of equipment."
