The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the launch of a new unit at Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base aimed at coordinating air and missile defence efforts, amid growing fears of a Washington-ordered attack on Iran.

The base, located southwest of Doha, hosts around 10,000 US troops and includes military personnel from 17 countries. It is the largest US military air base in the Middle East.

CENTCOM's commander described the move as "a significant step forward in strengthening regional defence cooperation", as Washington seeks to expand its air defence capabilities in the region, particularly in relation to Iran.

The newly established task force will also be "responsible for sharing information and threat warnings", according to CENTCOM.

At the same time, some personnel were advised to leave the base on Wednesday evening, three diplomats told Reuters, describing the move as a "posture change" rather than a formal evacuation order.

In a post on X, Qatar's International Media Office said reports of personnel leaving Al Udeid reflected "precautionary measures" taken in response to regional tensions. Any further directives, it added, would be communicated through official channels.

The movement of US personnel followed a Reuters report quoting an Iranian official who warned that Tehran would target American bases and assets in the region if Washington were to proceed with an attack on Iran.

Rhetoric from US President Donald Trump has intensified in recent days, with the president threatening "strong action" against Iran if authorities were to approve executions of political prisoners.

As nationwide protests continue, human rights groups say the death toll has risen to more than 2,500 people, including at least a dozen under the age of 18. Due to ongoing internet disruptions, The New Arab has not been able to independently verify the figure.

The US embassy in Iran, which operates virtually, has advised American citizens to leave the country overland via neighbouring Turkey or Armenia if possible, fuelling fears of a looming direct intervention.

Airlines have also begun suspending and cancelling flights to Iran through the weekend, causing widespread disruption to air travel to and from the country.
