Hello and welcome to our coverage of the Middle East.

Iranian media reported that an oil tanker had been hit near the country's major oil hub of Kharg Island, days after Washington renewed its war campaign against Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate by attacking assets across the Gulf.

The US military said Saturday it had struck and destroyed three oil tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after the Iranian military organisation fired on American warships.

"Following Iran's failed attacks, CENTCOM permanently disabled the IRGC crude oil carriers M/T Downy off the coast of Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask. American forces also completely destroyed the unladen crude oil carrier M/T Kylo... in the Gulf of Oman, striking the vessel in multiple critical locations to render it inoperable after the crew was directed to abandon ship," US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on X.

Saturday's attacks come after US President Donald Trump again threatened to attack Iran's Pickaxe Mountain "soon". It also follows an unprecedented sanctions campaign aimed at pressuring the Iranian economy.

Meanwhile, Israel continues to strike southern Lebanon, with local media reporting multiple strikes along the border areas overnight and into Saturday morning. At least three people were killed and more than 20 others injured in Israeli strikes on Friday, according to the country's health ministry.

In Yemen, the Houthi militant group has launched a large-scale offensive on positions controlled by the Saudi-backed government in the country's Taiz province, killing at least 129 people.

Iran on Saturday accused the US of attacking an Iranian tanker near Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. The US did not immediately comment, but a new strike would raise the risk of sparking a new round of Iranian attacks on US allies and interests in the region.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting said Saturday that four US missiles struck a tanker about six miles (10 kilometres) from Kharg Island. It said the crew was being evacuated and there were no casualties.

The report did not provide evidence or include comment from Iranian officials. US Central Command did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

UN nuclear agency members draft resolution reporting Iran

The United States, Britain, France and Germany have drafted a resolution for possible consideration by the Board of Governors of the UN nuclear watchdog that seeks to refer Iran to the UN Security Council for failure to comply with its nuclear nonproliferation obligations, diplomats say.

Under those obligations, part of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, Iran is legally bound to declare all nuclear material and activities and allow inspectors from the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency to verify that none of it is being diverted from peaceful uses.

The diplomatic move has been under consideration since June 2025, when the IAEA board found Iran officially in noncompliance with its nonproliferation obligations for the first time in 20 years — one day before the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran’s nuclear sites.

A possible referral of Iran to the UN Security Council shifts responsibility to a higher authority that can enact further legally binding measures, including sanctions or asset freezes.
