Iran launched strikes across the Gulf and Israel early Saturday in retaliation to US-Israeli strikes that targeted key economic industries in the country, including a major steel plant that has now ceased production.

Iran launched attacks on Israel, Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Economic Zones in the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait International Airport, where a radar was damaged, according to Al Jazeera.

The attacks came after Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran would exact a "heavy price" over US-Israeli strikes on key industries in the Iranian economy, which also saw strikes on the Bushehr nuclear plant and the University of Science and Technology in Tehran.

Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthis said they fired a barrage of missiles against Israeli military sites, in their first attack against Israel since the end of the war.

Spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a statement released on Friday that the group would enter the war, saying, "We affirm that our fingers are on the trigger for direct military intervention."

Pentagon preparing for ground operations in Iran: report
12:47 AM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The Pentagon is preparing plans for weeks of ground operations in Iran - potentially including raids on Kharg Island and coastal sites near the Strait of Hormuz - though President Donald Trump has not yet approved any deployment, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

Any ground operation would stop short of a full-scale invasion, instead involving raids by special operations forces and conventional infantry troops, the Post said, citing unnamed officials.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted on Friday the United States "can achieve all of our objectives without ground troops," but the Post said planning is advanced, with one official saying: "This is not last-minute planning."

The IRGC said, without elaborating, that the two companies had ties to U.S. military and aeronautics firms.

Two Israeli air strikes on two checkpoints of the Hamas-led police force killed at least six Palestinians including a child, local health officials said, in Israel's latest violation of the five-month US-brokered ceasefire.

Medics said Israeli planes attacked two police checkpoints in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, killing three policemen and three civilians, including a girl, and wounding four others.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the recent strikes. The military has killed over 680 Palestinians in Gaza since a ceasefire with Hamas came into effect in November, local health officials say.

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Iran's Revolutionary Guard on Sunday threatened to target US universities in the Middle East after saying US-Israeli strikes had destroyed two Iranian universities.

"If the US government wants its universities in the region to be free from retaliation... it must condemn the bombing of the universities in an official statement by 12 noon on Monday, March 30, Tehran time," said the statement published by Iranian media.

The statement added: "We advise all employees, professors, and students of American universities in the region and residents of their surrounding areas" stay a kilometre away from campuses.

Several US universities have campuses scattered throughout the Gulf region, such as Texas A&M University in Qatar and New York University in the United Arab Emirates.

Strikes overnight Friday to Saturday hit Tehran, including the university of science and technology in the northeast of the capital, damaging buildings but not causing any casualties, according to media reports.

Hundreds of Israelis protest against war, clash with police
8:11 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Hundreds of Israeli protesters gathered in Tel Aviv and some other cities on Saturday to protest the war in the Middle East, in unauthorised demonstrations that security forces sought to disperse.

Weekly protests against the war launched by Israel and the United States against Iran on February 28 have been taking place in Tel Aviv and other major cities, initially drawing only a few dozen participants.

Numbers now appear to be rising, though far from the tens of thousands who filled Tel Aviv's streets last year to protest the war in Gaza.

AFP footage showed law enforcement officers removing demonstrators in Tel Aviv. Similar scenes were filmed by activists in the northern city of Haifa.

According to an AFP journalist, at least four people were detained.

Under wartime security guidelines, gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited in Israel, as the country faces daily barrages of missiles and rockets from Iran and Lebanon.

The Israeli police said the "illegal demonstration" in Tel Aviv was dispersed after a Home Front Command representative clarified that such a gathering was prohibited under emergency regulations.

One official said the drones were shot down outside the Green Zone, which houses government institutions and diplomatic missions. A second official confirmed an attack by an "explosive" drone had been prevented.

The last such attack occurred on 18 March. The influential pro-Iranian armed group Kataeb Hezbollah subsequently said it would pause attacks on the US embassy, extending the five-day ceasefire twice.

Iran missile strike wounds 11 in Israel

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

A direct Iranian missile strike on a village in central Israel on Saturday wounded 11 people and left a massive crater, medics said, as the Middle East war entered its second month.

The missile hit a residential area in the village of Eshtaol, near Beit Shemesh, where nine people - including four minors - were killed in the early days of the war by a missile fired from Iran.

Several buildings were badly damaged in Saturday's strike, with metal wreckage and concrete debris scattered around, AFP footage showed. The blast also wrecked several cars and gouged a large crater at the impact site.

It was a "direct hit by an Iranian missile," Ohad Moyal, commander from the military's Home Front Command, told an AFP correspondent at the site of the strike. "Lots of buildings were hit," he added.

Thousands of US marines arrive in Middle East

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli has arrived in the Middle East, US Central Command said Saturday, as speculation soars about the possible deployment of US ground troops in Iran.

The ship, which is usually based in Japan, arrived in the region on Friday, Centcom said in a post on X, noting that the vessel is the flagship for a contingent of "about 3,500" marines and sailors.

The group also includes "transport and strike fighter aircraft, as well as amphibious assault and tactical assets," it said.

The post features four images, including one showing several Seahawk helicopters on the ship's deck, as well as some Osprey aircraft, typically used for personnel transport.

Another picture shows an F-35 fighter jet.

The arrival of the Tripoli group comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that Washington could achieve its objectives in Iran without deploying ground forces.

But US President Donald Trump has been vague on the issue for weeks, and several US media outlets have reported that he is mulling the idea of soon sending at least 10,000 troops to the Middle East.

The position is shared with the former paramilitary coalition the Popular Mobilisation Forces, a PMF official told AFP. The group is integrated into the army but still contains some pro-Iran factions.

Strike kills Iraqi fighter, wounds six more
5:18 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

A strike in northern Iraq on Saturday killed one Iraqi fighter and wounded six more, a medical official said, in the latest attack on a former paramilitary coalition that is now part of the army but includes pro-Iran factions.

Since the Middle East war began on 28 February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, Iraq has been increasingly drawn into a conflict it had sought to avoid at all costs.

Pro-Iran Iraqi armed groups have carried out drone and rocket attacks against multiple US targets including the embassy in Baghdad.

Strikes have also targeted bases of the former paramilitary group the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), which was integrated into the regular army but also contains some pro-Iran factions that have acted independently in the past. The PMF has blamed previous attacks on the US or Israel.

One PMF fighter was killed and six wounded after two missiles struck a base near Kirkuk city's international airport on Saturday, security and medical sources told AFP.

Egypt to slow down some state projects for two months
3:53 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Egypt will slow down large state projects that involve high fuel and diesel consumption for at least two months, while fuel allocations for all government vehicles will be cut by 30 percent, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Saturday.

Madbouly also said that both the public and the private sectors, with the exception of services and manufacturing sectors, will work remotely on every Sunday of April. The measure could be extended to an additional day per week or prolonged for further months if the war continues.

The move is part of broader measures to cope with the economic fallout from the Iran war, which has driven up energy costs and strained public finances.

Although Egypt is not directly involved in the conflict, it has been heavily affected, particularly in the energy sector, as it depends on imported fuel. Costs have ballooned with the disruption of oil and gas production and trade across the Middle East.

The government has already raised fuel prices and the price of public transport.

1:55 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Indonesia is in talks with Iran to secure safe passage for its tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran responding favourably to Jakarta's diplomatic efforts, a foreign ministry spokesman said Saturday.

US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran's retaliatory response in the Gulf have sent global oil prices soaring, with Iran maintaining a hold on the vital waterway.

Indonesian tankers Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro, owned by a subsidiary of state energy firm Pertamina, remain in the Gulf, a company spokesperson said.

The Indonesian government and its embassy in Tehran have held talks with the Iranian embassy in Jakarta and relevant parties in Tehran, which has responded positively to allow the ships to safely pass through the strait, foreign ministry spokesman Vahd Nabyl Achmad Mulachela said.

"The Iran embassy (in Jakarta) has conveyed the Iran government's favourable consideration regarding the safe passage of Pertamina Group's vessels in the Strait of Hormuz," he told AFP.

Ukraine denies Iran destroyed anti-drone system depot in UAE
1:05 PM
The New Arab Staff

Ukraine on Saturday said Iran was lying about having struck a depot housing Ukrainian anti-drone systems in the UAE, after Tehran said it destroyed a facility used to aid US forces.

Foreign ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhy said "this is a lie, we officially refute this information", saying Tehran "often conducts such disinformation operations".

Ukraine has moved rapidly to provide anti-drone expertise, developed while fending off Iranian-designed drones launched by Russia, to the Gulf countries as they come under fire from Iran.

Tykhy was speaking after Iran's central military command Khatam Al-Anbiya said in a statement carried by state TV that it had destroyed a depot in the United Arab Emirates.

"As the hideouts of American commanders and soldiers in Dubai were targeted... a depot of Ukrainian anti-drone systems that was located in Dubai to assist the US military ... was targeted and destroyed," the statement said.

India is gradually moving its stranded LPG cargoes out from the strait, with four LPG tankers moved so far - Shivalik, Nanda Devi, Pine Gas, and Jag Vasant.

As of Friday, 20 Indian-flagged ships including five LPG carriers were stranded in the Gulf, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, special secretary in the federal shipping ministry, said.
