Authorities in Saudi Arabia say security forces conducting a series of anti-terrorism raids have killed two suspects and arrested three.

The official Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday that the simultaneous raids targeted four sites in Dammam and the capital Riyadh.

The Interior Ministry said those targeted in the raid belonged to an affiliate of the extremist Islamic State group (IS) linked to an attack in Abha, 560 kilometers (350 miles) south of Mecca.

On 6 August, a suicide bomber the IS claimed responsibility for attacked a mosque inside a police compound in Abha, killing 15 people. It was the deadliest attack on the kingdom's security forces in years.

Those arrested were Fahd al-Harbi, Mohannad al-Utaibi and Faisal al-Ghamidi.

Abdulaziz al-Shamri and Uqil al-Mateiri were killed, the latter as he reportedly opened fire on the security forces.

Mateiri is known to have spent three years in a Saudi prison after returning from Iraq.

There has been a string of high-profile terror attacks targeting the kingdom's security forces and its Shia minority over the past year.

The bloodiest was in May, when a suicide bomber attacked a Shia mosque in Saudi Arabia's eastern Qatif governorate killing at least 20 and wounding 70.

Saudi Arabia is part of a US-led group fighting the IS in Iraq and Syria.
