American journalist Tucker Carlson released footage of himself visiting Palestinian refugees in Qatar on Thursday, alongside stinging criticism of Israel and the United States' support for it.

The conservative political commentator showed clips of his visit in the latest episode of the The Tucker Carlson Show titled "Why Are We Defending Mass Murder in Gaza? Because Our Greatest Ally Demands It".

"Among so-called 'civilised governments'. No one has behaved like Israel has behaved in Gaza in a very long time - 80 years at least," Carlson said.

"It's almost unbelievable. Tens of thousands of children killed, by a country with the most precise military technology in the world," he added.

Carlson said he and his team had to "hold back tears" during the trip, where they saw first-hand the "cruelty of the evil Israeli regime".

The video shows Carlson visiting a centre in Qatar housing some of the 2,000 Palestinians who have sought refuge there, many of whom are wounded and undergoing treatment.

Carlson, who said he hadn't planned to air the footage of the visit, said on the trip he met children who had been orphaned, children with "mangled faces" by Israeli strikes.

The video was shot on an iPhone, with Carlson saying that he didn't want to "stick a camera in people's faces and exploit the suffering of others".

By the end of the visit, the journalist said he and his three colleagues - some of whom had worked in conflict zones - were "staring at the forest trying not to cry".

Carlson's latest commentary on Israel's war on Gaza comes amid an ongoing rift within US President Trump's MAGA support base, between two camps that have been described by observers "America First" and "Israel First".

In his latest episode, Carlson also proposed that Qatar - a country he says has spent much of its time working as a mediator to end conflicts around the world - would be better placed than Israel as Washington's top ally.
