US President Donald Trump has urged nations including China, Britain and France to help secure the key Strait of Hormuz amid a threat from Iranian attacks. The UK responded by saying that it was discussing a number of options to assist in the passage of tankers and vessels through the waterway.

In an interview with NBC News, Trump said that while Tehran appeared ready to make a deal to end the war, "the terms aren’t good enough yet".

Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi called on regional countries to "expel" US forces from the region, warning that Tehran would begin targeting American companies in the Middle East if its energy facilities were bombed.

Meanwhile, US and Israeli attacks on Iran continue, with missiles hitting several sites across the country's central Isfahan province, killing at least 15 people. Explosions were also heard overnight in Shiraz, in the west of the country.

In the Gulf, Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced that it had targeted US forces with missiles at a base in Saudi Arabia's al-Kharj province. The Saudi defence ministry said it had intercepted six ballistic missiles in the province, without specifying whether the base was hit.

A drone attack was also reported overnight on Baghdad Airport, which houses a military base and an American diplomatic mission.

The UAE has denied Iran's accusations that the US attacks on Kharg Island were launched from the Emirates, a day after Trump announced large-scale strikes against military targets on the oil-rich hub.

Israel, meanwhile, has continued to attack Lebanon, killing more than a dozen people in strikes across the country's south. In Gaza, four people were killed when Israel targeted a vehicle in Nuseirat.

Japan not yet planning Hormuz escort mission
2:25 AM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Japan does not currently plan to dispatch naval vessels to escort ships in the Middle East, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Monday, after US President Donald Trump called on allies to help escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

"We have not made any decisions whatsoever about dispatching escort ships. We are continuing to examine what Japan can do independently and what can be done within the legal framework," Takaichi told parliament.

Trump's call in a social media post for US allies, including Japan, to help protect oil and gas shipments through the strategic waterway puts Tokyo in a difficult position because its war-renouncing constitution limits the scope of overseas military operations it can conduct.

The United States has yet to make a formal request for assistance, Takaichi said.

Macron also stressed the need for freedom of navigation to resume in the Strait of Hormuz.

"Freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be restored as soon as possible," he said.

The French president said lasting stability would require a new political and security framework addressing concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions, ballistic missile programme and regional activities.

"Only a new political and security framework can ensure peace and security for all," Macron said, adding that such an arrangement must guarantee Iran never acquires nuclear weapons.

Netanyahu posts video in response to rumours that he is dead
5:35 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a video of himself getting a cup of coffee and chatting with his aide on Sunday, after rumours that he was dead or injured were aired by Iranian state media and spread online in Iran.

In the video, taken at a cafe in Jerusalem's outskirts and posted on Netanyahu's Telegram account, his aide asks him about the rumours.

Netanyahu responds with a pun on the word dead - which in Hebrew slang can be used to describe "being crazy about" someone or something - as he reaches for a cup of coffee.

"I'm crazy about coffee. You know what? I’m crazy about my people," Netanyahu tells the aide.

Reuters verified the video's location from file imagery of the cafe, which matched the interiors seen in the video. The date was verified from multiple videos and photos of Netanyahu's visit posted by the cafe on Sunday.

Since the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, Netanyahu has visited at least two towns hit by Iranian missiles, a hospital, port and military bases, but there was little to no media access, and videos were distributed by his office.

Netanyahu, who rarely gives interviews to Israeli press or holds news conferences, convened his first press conference since the start of the war via a video link on Thursday, a similar format to the one he used in June during Israel's 12-day war with Iran.

Emergency safety restrictions in Israel since the start of the war ban public gatherings and have kept most people at home or close to shelters and safe rooms, with schools shut across most of the country.

WHO releases $2 m in emergency funds to Lebanon, Iraq, Syria
5:24 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The World Health Organization said on Sunday it had released $2 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE) to support the health response in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria amidst the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

The conflict has triggered a large-scale population movement, the WHO said last week, estimating that more than 100,000 people in Iran have relocated, and up to 700,000 people in Lebanon have been internally displaced.

$1 million has been allocated to Lebanon to strengthen the WHO's emergency coordination through the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, scale up trauma care, reinforce disease surveillance, and procure and distribute essential medicines and medical supplies, the agency said in a statement.

Iraq and Syria have each been allocated $500,000 to support emergency coordination and mass-casualty management, procure and distribute essential medicines and supplies, provide health services for displaced populations, and strengthen disease surveillance and community outreach, it added.

"At a time when health services are already facing significant challenges, support is essential to sustain frontline health workers and maintain critical care services," Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean said.

"We never asked for a ceasefire, and we have never asked even for negotiation," Araghchi said.

He added that Iran was ready to talk to countries who want to negotiate for selected oil tankers to pass through the key Strait of Hormuz export route.

Iranian missiles injure at least 8 people in Israel

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

At least eight people were injured in Israel Sunday following repeated missile launches from Iran, at least two of which contained cluster munitions according to Israeli authorities.

Israeli police released footage from a CCTV camera in the Tel Aviv area showing an impact on a road, saying that it was from "cluster munitions" that caused "damage at several locations".

Bomblets and shrapnel from the missile wounded four people in various parts of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, according to the Magen David Adom (MDA) rescue service.

A man in his 60s was hospitalised with moderate injuries to his head from broken glass, while three were treated due to the shock waves from the blast.

In another barrage shortly before noon, two men aged 62 and 44 reported minor injuries "from pieces of asphalt that struck them as a result of the blast", according to MDA.

During a salvo towards the Tel Aviv area at around 3:00 am (0100 GMT), a man and a woman in their 80s suffered light injuries, from glass shards and smoke inhalation respectively.

Another Iranian missile directed at Israel's southernmost city of Eilat was intercepted before reaching the target, without causing injuries. The municipality of Eilat quoted security sources saying it was a cluster missile.

By late midday on Sunday, seven missile salvos were launched from Iran toward the State of Israel, some of which were intercepted.

According to Haaretz, citing security officials, 250 ballistic missiles had been fired by Iran at Israel as of March 13.

Twelve people have been killed in Israel by missiles or falling debris since the start of the war, according to an AFP tally of figures given by Israeli authorities and first responders.

"Thousands of innocent people have been killed, and countless others have been forced to flee their homes.

"I renew my closeness to all those who have lost loved ones in the attacks that have hit schools, hospitals, and residential areas."

Leo said the situation in Lebanon was a particular cause for concern.

"On behalf of the Christians of the Middle East and of all women and men of goodwill, I address those responsible for this conflict," he said in Italian.

"Ceasefire! Let paths of dialogue be reopened!

"Violence can never lead to the justice, stability and peace that people await."

The Qatar MotoGP scheduled for April 12 has been postponed to November 8 due to the war in the Middle East, the world championship organiser said on Sunday.

The switch follows the cancellation of two Formula 1 Grand Prix races in the Gulf.

This rescheduling means that the season will end slightly later than planned.

While the Qatar Grand Prix was originally scheduled as the fourth race of the season, it will now be the 20th and penultimate round of the 2026 championship.

The Portuguese Grand Prix, which was to take place on November 15th, has therefore been postponed to November 22nd, while the traditional final round of the season in Valencia will take place on November 29th, a week later than planned.

Israel has approved an $827-million emergency budget allocation for military purchases, Israeli media reported Sunday, as the war with Iran entered its third week.

The 2.6-billion-shekel package was approved over the weekend by cabinet ministers during a telephone meeting, the daily Haaretz reported.

It will be used for "security purchases" and to address "urgent needs", it said, without providing further details.

A finance ministry document circulated to all ministers and reported by several media outlets, including Channel 12, said that "given the intensity of the fighting" the additional budget allocation was necessary.

"An urgent and immediate need has arisen to provide an operational response, including the acquisition of munitions, the procurement of advanced weapons systems and the replenishment of critical combat stocks," the document said.

The document added that the move constituted "an exceptional emergency decision intended solely to address needs arising from the conduct of the fighting".

The funds will be drawn from the state budget, totalling $222 billion and approved by the government on March 12, and expected to be adopted by the Knesset by March 31, according to the reports.

The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not yet officially commented on the measure or specified what purchases the funds will cover.
