Israel's military said on Tuesday that it had expanded its operations in Gaza, where residents reported fierce gunfire and shelling days ahead of a planned trip to Washington by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The intensified operations came after days of mounting calls for a ceasefire, with US President Donald Trump - whom Netanyahu is slated to meet with next week - among those urging Israel to strike a new deal to halt the war and bring home the captives still held in Gaza.

Israeli forces killed scores of Palestinians seeking aid at several humanitarian relief points, including near Rafah and the Netzarim corridor.

This marks the latest incident of such a kind at an aid distribution point run by the Israeli-US-owned  Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which has been accused of being a "death trap" for desperate Palestinians searching for aid.

Since starting its operations in the Gaza Strip, almost 600 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, with over 4,000 people injured.

More than 170 aid organisations called for an end to the US- and Israeli-backed aid distribution scheme, which they said forced starving civilians to "trek for hours through dangerous terrain and active conflict zones, only to face a violent, chaotic race" for food.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that a truce in the war-battered territory could be happen " sometime next week".

"We hope it's going to happen, and we're looking for it to happen sometime next week," Trump responded as he departed Washington for Florida.

Iran made preparations to mine the Hormuz Strait: US sources
11:33 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The Iranian military loaded naval mines onto vessels in the Persian Gulf last month, a move that intensified concerns in Washington that Tehran was gearing up to blockade the Strait of Hormuz following Israel's strikes on sites across Iran, according to two US officials.

The previously unreported preparations, which were detected by US intelligence, occurred some time after Israel launched its initial missile attack against Iran on 13 June, said the officials, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence matters.

The loading of the mines - which have not been deployed in the strait - suggests that Tehran may have been serious about closing one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, a move that would have escalated an already-spiraling conflict and severely hobbled global commerce.

About one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz and a blockage would likely have spiked world energy prices.

At least 10,000 people joined an opposition rally at Istanbul City Hall Tuesday on the 100th day since the city's popular mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was jailed in what critics say was a politically-motivated graft probe.

The early-morning arrests were part of a probe into alleged graft, and followed similar lines to the March 19 operation in opposition-run Istanbul when hundreds were arrested, including Imamoglu, Erdogan's main political rival.

UN report names companies complicit in Israel's war on Gaza
9:14 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

A UN expert has named over 60 companies, including major arms manufacturers and technology firms, in a report alleging their involvement in supporting Israeli settlements and military actions in Gaza, which she called a "genocidal campaign."

Italian human rights lawyer Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, compiled the report based on over 200 submissions from states, human rights defenders, companies, and academics.

The report, published late Monday, calls for companies to cease dealings with Israel and for legal accountability for executives implicated in alleged violations of international law.

"While life in Gaza is being obliterated and the West Bank is under escalating assault, this report shows why Israel's genocide continues: because it is lucrative for many," Albanese wrote in the 27-page document.

She accused corporate entities of being "financially bound to Israel's apartheid and militarism."

The New Arab Staff

The Red Cross said Tuesday it is "deeply alarmed" by Israel's intensifying assault on northern Gaza, warning that the territory's "decimated" healthcare system is not able to handle the surge in casualties.

"The International Committee of the Red Cross is deeply alarmed by the intensifying hostilities in Gaza City and Jabaliya, which have reportedly caused dozens of deaths and injuries among civilians over the past 36 hours," the ICRC said in a statement.

"The intensification of hostilities comes as Gaza’s already-decimated healthcare system struggles to absorb a relentless surge in critical cases. Nearly all public hospitals in Gaza are shut down or gutted by months of hostilities and restrictions on the entry of critical medicine, supplies and equipment," it said.

"The few medical facilities that continue to function – including the Red Cross Field Hospital – are overwhelmed and running dangerously low on essential supplies, including fuel, and even body bags."

The EU's top diplomat told Iran's foreign minister Tuesday that Brussels is willing to facilitate a return to negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme after US and Israeli strikes.

"Negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme should restart as soon as possible" and "cooperation" with the International Atomic Energy Agency must resume. The EU is ready to facilitate this", EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas wrote on X after a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Iran suspended ties with the UN agency last week in response to the Israel-US attack on its nuclear sites.

Araghchi has expressed outrage at IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, accusing him of an "astounding betrayal of his duties" for refusing to condemn the strikes.

In a statement on his Telegram channel, Iran's top diplomat said he criticised European leaders' support for the attack during his conversation with Kallas, and warned that their position will further complicate diplomatic efforts to end the impasse over the country's nuclear programme.

Lebanon drafts reply to US demand for Hezbollah to disarm
2:04 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Lebanese officials were drafting a response on Tuesday to US demands for armed group Hezbollah to relinquish its weapons across the country by November in exchange for a halt to Israeli military operations, two sources briefed on the matter said.

The deadline has turned up the heat on Iran-backed Hezbollah, which was struck hard by Israel during last year's war, is suffering a financial crunch and faces pressure in Lebanon to disarm.

Washington's demands were conveyed by Thomas Barrack, US special envoy to Syria and ambassador to Turkey, during a trip to Beirut on June 19.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, told Reuters Barrack had shared a written roadmap with Lebanese officials and told them he expected to hear back by July 1 on any proposed amendments.

The six-page document centers on the disarmament of Hezbollah and other militant groups, and urges Lebanon to improve ties with neighbouring Syria and implement financial reforms, they said.

It proposes a phased approach to disarmament, in which Hezbollah would hand in its arms throughout Lebanon in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli troops occupying areas in south Lebanon, the sources said.

Over 170 charities call for end to deadly GHD aid point
12:47 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

More than 170 non-governmental organisations called on Tuesday for a US-and Israeli-backed food aid distribution scheme in Gaza to be dismantled over concerns it is putting civilians at risk of death and injury.

More than 500 people have been killed in mass shootings near aid distribution centres or transport routes guarded by Israeli forces since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation started operating in late May, according to medical authorities in Gaza.

The GHF uses private US security and logistics companies to get supplies into Gaza, largely bypassing a UN-led system that Israel says had let militants divert aid. The United Nations has called the plan "inherently unsafe" and a violation of humanitarian impartiality rules.

As of early afternoon in Geneva on Tuesday, where the joint declaration was released, 171 charities had signed onto the call for countries to press Israel to halt the GHF scheme and reinstate aid coordinated through the United Nations.

"Palestinians in Gaza face an impossible choice: starve or risk being shot while trying desperately to reach food to feed their families," the statement said. Groups signing it included Oxfam, Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, the Norwegian Refugee Council and Amnesty International.

She accused corporate entities of being "financially bound to Israel's apartheid and militarism."

Israel's mission in Geneva said the report was "legally groundless, defamatory and a flagrant abuse of her office". The Israeli prime minister's office and the foreign office did not immediately return requests for comment.
