US President Donald Trump has ordered a review of the visa application process for Egyptians, days after an attack in Colorado led to a crackdown on Muslims and immigrants in the country, with an Egyptian suspect held in custody.

Trump has asked the US State Department to investigate the "practices and procedures" of Egypt when screening nationals entering the country.

It comes as the White House banned the entry of nationals from 12 countries to the US, citing Sunday's event.

Although Egypt is not included in the list of banned countries, Trump also ordered a review of the entry of Egyptians into the US in the order.

"Additionally, and in light of recent events, the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Attorney General, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the Director of National Intelligence, shall provide me an update to the review of the practices and procedures of Egypt to confirm the adequacy of its current screening and vetting capabilities," the White House statement regarding the entry restrictions read.

It comes after a pro-Israel rally in Boulder was targeted by a man carrying a flamethrower and Molotov cocktails, injuring 12 people, some of them seriously.

Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault, and possession of an incendiary device.

He had reportedly planned the attack for over a year and told police he would do it again, saying his goal was "to target Zionists", according to reports. The New Arab cannot verify the claims.

Soliman was reportedly in the country "illegally", having overstayed a tourist visa, and had applied for asylum, according to US officials.

The attack led to a huge backlash in the US, with Trump attempting to deport the family of the suspect back to Egypt, who were detained while investigations continue.

The White House tweeted a statement saying: "The wife and five children of illegal alien Mohamed Soliman - the suspect in the antisemitic firebombing of Jewish Americans- have been captured and are now in ICE custody for expedited removal.

"Six One-Way Tickets for Mohamed's Wife and Five Kids. Final Boarding Call Coming Soon."

Trump on Wednesday announced a ban on the entry of citizens from 12 mostly Muslim-majority countries to the US, citing the attack: Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

It comes after two Israeli embassy staff were gunned down outside the Jewish Museum in Washington, the attack allegedly inspired by the Gaza war.

The New Arab has reached out to the US State Department for comment on the Egypt visa review process.
