Trump announces agreement for 'complete disarmament' of Hamas

US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced an agreement for the "complete disarmament" of Hamas, calling it a critical step toward a new Palestinian government in Gaza.

"Today, the Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza. This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump said the deal would be carried out in phases, with Israeli forces withdrawing as disarmament proceeds and an International Stabilisation Force working with a new Palestinian police force to secure the enclave.

"As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza," he said.

He thanked mediators Egypt, Qatar and Turkey.

"This agreement is a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government that will work closely with the Board of Peace to help the Palestinian people," Trump said.

"At the same time, Israel will have the security it deserves," Trump added.

Earlier in the day, sources said that talks between mediators and Hamas leaders in Cairo on implementing a US-brokered Gaza peace plan made rare progress although an Israeli official said proposed terms were not satisfactory.

Israeli strikes killed at least six Palestinians in Gaza on Thursday, including two children, medics said.

Senior Hamas officials confirmed Friday that they have reached a deal to end the conflict with Israel, with two officials from the Palestinian Islamist movement, speaking on condition of anonymity, telling AFP that they had come to an agreement.

"An agreement has been reached regarding the issue of weapons... Furthermore, an agreement has been reached on a gradual withdrawal of (Israeli forces)" from the strip, a Hamas official said, adding that the Islamist movement now expects the mediators and the Board of Peace to ensure that Israel complies with the terms of the deal.

Cairo is set to host a meeting "soon" of the Gaza truce mediators, which also include the United States, Qatar and Turkey, state-linked Al-Qahera News reported early Friday.

The news outlet, which is linked to the state intelligence services that manage Gaza negotiations, did not specify when the meeting would take place, but said that it would discuss implementing the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan, a roadmap for which Hamas and Palestinian factions have agreed to.
