NYPD chief Tisch apologises to Mamdani after brother calls mayor-elect 'enemy' of Jews
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch has personally apologised to Zohran Mamdani after her brother accused the mayor-elect of being an "enemy" of Jews, The New York Post reported.
Benjamin Tisch, CEO of the Tisch family-owned Loews Corporation, made the remarks at a charity dinner on Wednesday.
Mamdani told reporters on Thursday that the police commissioner had reached out to apologise.
"The commissioner apologised to my team for those remarks," Mamdani said. I look forward to being a mayor for each and every New Yorker, including Jewish New Yorkers."
Mamdani's reappointment of Tisch - who first took office under outgoing Mayor Eric Adams - stirred controversy among his supporters, with many highlighting the police commissioner's pro-Israel views.
Following the announcement that Tisch would retain her job last month, a coalition of pro-Palestine groups issued a statement highlighting the police commissioner's links to Israel.
"Tisch’s record is inseparable from the NYPD’s direct collaboration with the Israeli occupation," the statement said.
Tisch's billionaire father, James Tisch, is a prominent supporter of Israel and served as chairman of the board of governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel - a group which encourages Jewish migration to the country.
During the course of the war, the Tisch family projected images of Israeli captives onto the walls of New York University's library without the university's permission.
