Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that Tehran will no longer target neighbouring countries, unless an attack originates from there, as the US-Israeli war on Iran enters its second week.

Despite the formal announcement, attacks on Gulf countries including the UAE and Qatar continued overnight and into the morning. Dubai International Airport was targeted overnight, leading to a suspension of flights.

Meanwhile, Israel has announced multiple waves of attacks on Iran as residents of Tehran and major cities across the country reported hearing constant sounds of explosions from missile strikes and interceptions. The death toll in the country has surpassed 1,300.

Israel has also intensified its attacks on Lebanon, with an overnight strike on the town of Nabi Chit killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens more.

Hezbollah has said it engaged in fighting with Israeli soldiers on the ground in eastern Bekaa amid reports of Israeli forces attempting a landing operation along the border between Lebanon and Syria, as Tel Aviv looks to push further inside Lebanese territory.

Trump mulls sending troops to secure Iran's uranium
11:55 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

US President Donald Trump evoked Saturday the idea of sending ground troops into Iran to secure the country's stockpiles of enriched uranium, as part of efforts to dismantle Tehran's nuclear program.

"At some point maybe we will. That would be a great thing," he told reporters during a briefing aboard Air Force One.

"We haven't gone after it, but it's something we could do later," he said.

Some critics of the US-Israeli war on Iran, launched last Saturday, have said air strikes alone are unlikely to achieve the stated goals of destroying Iran's military capacity and preventing it from developing a nuclear bomb.

Asked about the use of ground troops in general, Trump did not rule it out, saying: "Could there be? Possibly, for a very good reason -- it'd have to be a very good reason."

"And I would say if we ever did that, they would be so decimated that they wouldn't be able to fight at the ground level," he said.

Australia may help protect Gulf states from Iran attacks: FM
11:43 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Australia will consider a request by Gulf states for assistance against Iranian drone and missile attacks, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Sunday.

Speaking to national broadcaster ABC, Wong said "we've had many countries which are non-participants have been attacked by Iran through this... we have been asked for assistance".

Asked whether that meant assistance in protecting them from Iranian drone and missile attacks, Wong said "correct".

"We will work through that in accordance with the position I have outlined, which is, we are not participating in offensive action against Iran, and we've made clear we would not participate in any ground troop deployment into Iran," she said.

The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran last week that killed its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and triggered a war in the Middle East.

Iran responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Gulf states like the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar.

The attacks have forced busy Gulf hubs, including Dubai and Doha, to suspend flights, leaving passengers stranded around the world.

Australia backed the US-Israeli strikes as necessary to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

It has a small military presence in the Middle East -- around 100 personnel, many stationed at the Al Minhad base in the UAE.

Officials have said Canberra has no plans to take part in any military action against Iran.

But the country has close military ties with the United States.

As of last month, around 70 Australian military personnel are currently serving on American nuclear submarines, Canberra has said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that three Australian personnel had been on board a US submarine when it sank an Iranian ship on Wednesday.

The personnel were on the submarine as part of training arrangements under AUKUS, a multi-decade defence pact with Britain and the United States, Albanese said.

Several drones have been intercepted near Baghdad airport since the start of the war in the Middle East.

In Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region, an AFP journalist reported hearing the sound of a drone followed by at least three loud bangs.

Since the start of the war, drones have repeatedly been intercepted over the city of Erbil, which is also home to a major US consulate complex.

Iran chief says US, Israel seeking 'disintegration of Iran'
8:26 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Iran's security chief Ali Larijani said on Saturday that the United States and Israel were seeking to break the Islamic Republic apart.

"Their issue was... the fundamental disintegration of Iran," said Larijani in a pre-recorded interview broadcast on state TV.

On February 28, the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran that killed its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggered a war in the Middle East.

Iran responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as US interests across the region.

He said the US was seeking to replicate in Iran a scenario similar to Venezuela, where interim president Delcy Rodriguez has cooperated with him under threat of violence after Washington ousted her boss, Nicolas Maduro.

"I think the most important problem the Americans have is that they do not understand the context of West Asia, especially Iran," said Larijani.

"Their perception was that it would be like Venezuela -- they would strike, take control, and it would be over --but now they are trapped."

Israeli army 'unintentionally' struck UN truck in Gaza
6:17 PM

Israel's military said on Friday that a "firing component" launched by its navy 'unintentionally' struck a fuel truck belonging to a United Nations agency in Gaza the previous day, an incident that prompted the agency to publicly call for a full investigation.

The United Nations Office for Project Services, which oversees fuel distribution in the war-battered Gaza Strip, said that the empty fuel truck was struck on Thursday around 5 a.m. from the direction of the sea, causing damage to the vehicle. There were no injuries.

"Our teams are taking extraordinary risks every day to keep humanitarian operations and life-sustaining services running," UNOPS Executive Director Jorge Moreira da Silva said in a statement, calling for an investigation into the incident.

"They should not have to do that under fire," he said.

Israel's war on Gaza has killed over 70,000 Palestinians since it started in October 2023. International rights groups have determined that the war amounts to genocide and have documented many examples of the Israeli army targeting aid-seekers and distribution sites.

Israel says struck 16 IRGC aircrafts at Tehran airport
2:44 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Israel's military said on Saturday it had struck 16 Iranian aircraft at Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport, which it said was a key hub for the Islamic republic's Revolutionary Guards.

"Overnight, the Israeli Air Force... completed a broad wave of strikes across Tehran and on military infrastructure located at the 'Merabad Airport' in Tehran", it said in a statement.

"16 aircraft of the 'Quds Force' unit of the IRGC were precisely dismantled", it said, referring to the branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guards that oversees its foreign operations.

The military accused the Guards of using Mehrabad International Airport, one of two that serve the capital, to send cash and weapons to its proxies in the Middle East, including Lebanon's Hezbollah.

"Also targeted were several Iranian fighter jets that posed a threat to Israeli Air Force aircraft operating in Iranian airspace", the statement added.

Earlier on Saturday, Israel's military said more than 80 fighter jets completed a wave of strikes on Iranian military sites, missile launchers and other targets in Tehran and central Iran on the same day.

"Over 80 Israeli Air Force fighter jets... completed an additional wave of strikes targeting infrastructure belonging to the Iranian terror regime," the military said in a statement.

In one of the biggest raids announced by Israel since the regional war began on February 28, the statement said that jets hit a military academy belonging to the Revolutionary Guards which "was being used as an emergency asset".

It said the facility was being used for military operations, making it "a lawful military objective".

Other targets included an underground command centre and missile storage facility as well as launch sites, "in order to reduce the scope of fire directed at the territory of the State of Israel", the statement said.

When Israel joined the United States in a massive wave of strikes on Iran at the start of the war, the Israeli military said 200 fighter jets took part in the raids, calling it the largest in the air force's history.

An official from an exiled opposition group in Kurdistan told AFP that drones struck positions belonging to three Iranian Kurdish parties without causing casualties.

The Revolutionary Guards said in a statement carried by Tasnim news agency that "three locations of separatist groups in the Iraqi region (of Kurdistan) were hit... this morning."

Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region hosts camps and rear bases operated by several Iranian Kurdish militant groups that have repeatedly come under Iranian fire since the war began.

Tehran threatened to target "all the facilities" of Kurdistan if militants were allowed to enter the Islamic republic.

The Iraqi government and the autonomous region said Friday that Iraq must not be a launchpad for attacks against neighbouring countries, following reports that militants might attempt to cross into Iran.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday condemned an attack a day earlier on a UN base in southern Lebanon that seriously wounded three Ghanaian UN peacekeepers.

The Lebanese president has accused Israel of targeting them and the UN peacekeeping force has said it will investigate.

"The secretary-general condemns the incident on Friday March... in Al Qawzah, southwestern Lebanon, amidst heavy firing," Guterres's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

"The secretary-general underscores that the safety and security of UN personnel and property must be respected at all times, and that those responsible must be held accountable. The inviolability of UN installations must be respected by all."

The attack occurred during an exchange of fire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah.

The international UN peacekeeping force has acted as a buffer between Israel and Lebanon since 1978.

Dujarric said the UN urged the parties to the conflict "to de-escalate immediately and fully adhere to their obligations under (UN) Security Council resolution 1701".

The UN resolution was designed to end a conflict in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah. It served as the basis for a ceasefire agreement in 2024 between Hezbollah and Israel.

The outlook poses a wider global economic threat, as well as a political vulnerability for U.S. President Donald Trump leading into the midterm elections, with voters sensitive to energy bills and unfavorable to foreign entanglements.

The United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon on Saturday urged Lebanon and Israel to enter talks to negotiate an end hostilities after the outbreak of a renewed Israel-Lebanon war.

"Talks between Lebanon and Israel can be the game changer needed to save future generations from going, time and again, through the same nightmare".

In December, Lebanese and Israeli civilian representatives engaged in their first direct talks in decades as part of a meeting of a committee monitoring the November 2024 ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

War across the Middle East erupted after the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on February 28, killing the Islamic republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has since responded with drone and missile attacks against Israel as well as US interests in the region.

The foreign ministers of the Arab League will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss Iranian attacks on several of the group's members, the bloc's assistant secretary-general told AFP.

The meeting, which will be held via videoconference, was requested by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Jordan and Egypt, Hossam Zaki said.

US and Israeli forces launched a massive air campaign against Iran on February 28. Iran has retaliated with strikes against Israel and Gulf countries.

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit had earlier condemned the Iranian attacks, saying they are "fully reprehensible" and "not only a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, but also an assault on the principles of good neighbourliness".

He added that the attacks "create an unprecedented state of hostility between Iran and its Arab neighbours".

"This is a grave Iranian strategic mistake, which I hope they will rectify by halting these attacks immediately."

Saudi Arabia's Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman urged Iran to "avoid miscalculation" on Saturday, following missile and drone launches against the kingdom.

In a series of statements, the Saudi defence ministry said it had thwarted repeated missile launches at an air base which houses US military personnel and drone attacks at a major oil field.

Iran is pressing attacks across the Gulf, a week since US-Israeli strikes against Iran triggered a regional war.

Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter, reported at least two drone attacks earlier this week that targeted the Ras Tanura refinery in the east.

Prince Khalid posted on X after meeting with Pakistan's military chief that the pair had "discussed Iranian attacks on the Kingdom and the measures needed to halt them".

"We stressed that such actions undermine regional security and stability and expressed hope that the Iranian side will exercise wisdom and avoid miscalculation," he added.

The defence ministry earlier posted on X that "a ballistic missile launched towards Prince Sultan Air Base" southeast of the capital Riyadh was "intercepted and destroyed".

The official Saudi Press Agency later reported another missile attack at the same base, saying it was also intercepted, quoting a defence ministry spokesperson.

The news agency also reported at least 17 drone attacks targeting the Shaybah oil field near the Emirati border. The drones were "intercepted and destroyed", it said.

In a separate incident, two drones were intercepted east of Riyadh, according to the defence ministry.

Iran military warns Azerbaijan to expel Israeli presence

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Iran's military called on its neighbour Azerbaijan to "expel the Zionists" from its territory on Saturday in order to preserve its security, a day after Baku accused Tehran of plotting attacks on its territory.

Israel is a close ally of Azerbaijan's and a key arms supplier, while Tehran has long accused Israel of using Azerbaijani territory for intelligence operations.

"We declare to Iran's neighbouring country, the Republic of Azerbaijan, as a Muslim country, to expel the Zionists from that country in order to prevent the spread of insecurity in the region and not to endanger the security of its people and Islamic Iran," a military spokesman said in a statement.

Azerbaijan on Friday said it had foiled a series of planned Iranian terrorist attacks on its territory, including on a key oil pipeline, a synagogue and Jewish community leaders.

Iran did not comment on the accusations.

On Thursday at least four drones crashed into Azerbaijan's exclave of Nakhchivan, including one that hit an airport, with Baku blaming Tehran.

Tehran denied the allegation and accused Israel of trying to stage a provocation.
