Syrian actress Huda Shaarawi was found dead at her apartment in Damascus on Thursday, with authorities saying that initial investigations indicated that she was murdered.

Syria's Interior Ministry said an investigation had been opened into the matter, without giving further details.

Other reports, citing Syrian Artists Syndicate head Mazen al-Natour, said investigations indicated that Shaarawi, 88, was killed between 5 and 6am on Thursday morning. Al-Natour added that the prime suspect is Shaarawi's maid, who is at large.

Born in 1938, Shaarawi featured in Syrian radio programmes from the age of nine, including in the series "The Rule of Justice".

Her other works over the decades include theatrical performances covering historical events and period dramas.

Shaarawi was best known for her role as 'Umm Zaki' in the popular television period drama 'Bab Al-Hara', which she acted in from seasons 1-9.
