Syria's electoral authority on Monday began receiving applications for the formation of the electoral body in the northern governorate of Raqqa, as authorities work to complete the composition of the new People's Assembly.

In a statement posted on Telegram, the High Elections Committee announced that the Raqqa electoral district will include 150 members tasked with nominating three members of parliament. In the Tabqa district, 50 members will elect one representative.

Raqqa governorate is divided into three electoral districts - Raqqa, Tabqa and Tell Abyad. Representatives for Tell Abyad were elected last October.

During a meeting on Sunday with subcommittees in Raqqa and Tabqa, the committee emphasised the need for broad social representation, including quotas for women and people with disabilities, alongside the inclusion of prominent and qualified figures.

On 17 February, the High Elections Committee issued a decision confirming the final list of subcommittees for the Raqqa and Tabqa districts.

Earlier this month, the committee noted that nine electoral districts remain to be filled to complete the election of two-thirds of the assembly's members, accounting for 18 seats.

Beyond Raqqa and Tabqa, the outstanding districts include three seats in Hasakah, four in Qamishli, two in Malikiyah and two in Ain al-Arab in Aleppo governorate. The districts of Suweida, Shahba and Salkhad in Suweida governorate each have one seat still to be filled.

Indirect elections for the People’s Assembly were held in early October, the first since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 following a rebel offensive.

The process led to the selection of 119 representatives from 49 electoral districts across 14 governorates, out of a total of 60 districts. The 210-member assembly comprises 140 elected seats and 70 appointed by President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
