Far-right Israeli minister Smotrich posts picture of son in coma after Hezbollah assault

Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has posted a picture of his son lying in a coma, after he was badly injured in a suspected Hezbollah attack.

The unit in which Smotrich's son Benya Hebron was active came under mortar fire close to the Lebanese border on 6 March, when Hezbollah launched a wave of attacks on Israeli forces taking part in the invasion of Lebanon.

Hebron sustained liver injuries, when a piece of shrapnel stopping at the wall of the largest blood vessel and has reportedly been in a coma since.

Smotrich has posted pictures of his son lying in a hospital bed and of the staff treating him, with a new update on X on Wednesday about his son's condition.

"Good morning. After another night by our hero's side, who, thank God, passed a bit more calmly than yesterday. We continue to progress, God willing," he wrote.

"Please continue to pray for the healing of Binyamin Chevron, son of Rivital, among all the wounded of the IDF and the sick of Israel."

Not much is known about Hebron, other than he serves in the Israeli army's Golani Brigade.

Earlier in the week, Smotrich said he hoped his son would make a full recovery and "return to full strength and to the [Israeli army]".

Israel has launched a huge assault on Lebanon shortly after its war on Iran, forcing around a million people to flee their homes and killing 1,001 people since 2 March.

Israel has made further incursions into Lebanon since then and ordered residents of huge areas of the country, including south Lebanon and the southern Beirut suburbs, to leave their homes amid a wave of bombing.

Israel's assault has caused one of the worst humanitarian disasters in Lebanon for decades.

Smotrich is one of Israel's most powerful political figures, with a record of encouraging ethnic cleansing and making statements that appear to condone the killing of Palestinians.

He has also called for the reoccupation of southern Lebanon, something that seems to be coming to fruition with Israel's demand Lebanese move north of the Litani River.
