SATC actor Cynthia Nixon wears Palestinian flag shirt in promotional video for show
US actor Cynthia Nixon wore an outfit bearing a design and colours resembling the Palestinian national flag in a promotional video for the latest season of the TV series "And Just Like that".
Nixon wore a white shirt which also featured red, green and black colours. The green appeared as a horizontal stripe, with the shirt’s adjacent sleeve was black. The red took the form of a triangle – much like how it appears on the Palestinian flag.
The video clip featured Nixon and co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis discussing season three of the show, which acts a revival and a sequel to Sex and The City, which propelled Nixon to fame in the late 1990s.
The video clip was posted on HBO's official social media channels. Nixon famously starred as Miranda Hobbes in the hit series from 1998 to 2004.
Nixon’s choice of clothing was praised by pro-Palestinian activists on social media for bringing attention to the war in Gaza, but drew the ire of pro-Israelis and right-wingers.
Israeli media accused her of "downplaying Hamas’s actions" and "ignoring the murders and torture committed against [Hamas's] Palestinian opponents".
The 59-year-old has been among the most prominent US celebrities to speak out against Israel’s atrocities in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the war in October 2023, as well as continued US aid and support for Israel.
Israel’s war has killed over 51,000 Palestinians oved the past 18 months, in atrocities widely described as genocide and war crimes. On 18 March, the Israeli army renewed its attacks on the Gaza Strip, breaking a ceasefire, and killing over 1,500 people since.
In November 2023, the US actress took part in a five-day hunger strike protesting Washington’s complicity in the Israeli onslaught. The US has allowed Israel to continue its war with impunity while providing billions of dollars’ worth of weapons.
In September 2024, Nixon was among a number of Hollywood stars who signed a letter urging for a US arms embargo on Israel under the Artists4Ceasefire collective.
During hearings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Nixon was among 25 actors who appeared in videos supporting South Africa's case against Israel, which accused it of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
