Primark expands Gulf footprint with first Saudi Arabia store
British-Irish budget fashion retailer Primark is set to expand across the Gulf with the launch of its first store in Saudi Arabia, following successful openings in Dubai and Kuwait.
Operating in partnership with Alshaya Group, the companies announced on Thursday that Primark will open its first-ever Saudi Arabian store at The Avenues in Riyadh in March 2027.
In a statement, Alshaya Group CEO John Hadden said the company was "incredibly proud" to be opening in Saudi Arabia, confirming there would be "more stores to follow in the Kingdom".
Ahead of its Saudi launch, Primark is due to open its first store in Bahrain at City Centre Bahrain on 23 September, followed by its first Qatar store at Doha Festival City on 29 October.
Primark's interim CEO Eoin Tonge said the retailer's reception in Kuwait had been "amazing", adding that it demonstrated "the potential of our brand in the Middle East".
"Today is an exciting moment for us and our growth ambitions, as we move forward with plans to reach 21 countries," Tonge added.
The latest expansion builds on Primark's existing presence in Kuwait and its three-store rollout in the UAE.
Like other major fast-fashion retailers, Primark has faced criticism from labour rights and environmental campaigners over its low-cost, high-volume business model.
Many have raised concerns over wages and working conditions within garment supply chains, pressure on suppliers and the environmental impact of mass-produced inexpensive clothing.
Primark says its low prices are made possible through its scale, efficient buying and low operating costs rather than compromising ethical or quality standards. The company has introduced ethical-trade and sustainability programmes, including commitments on more sustainable materials, product durability and reducing its environmental impact.
The retailer opened its first three UAE stores earlier this year at Dubai Mall, City Centre Mirdif and Mall of the Emirates in Dubai, following its regional debut in Kuwait last October.
