Ahmad Soufi, who earned the title of Iran's oldest man based on a national census, died on Wednesday in the country's eastern Kurdistan province, local media have reported.
Soufi was recorded, although unverified, as 135 years old during the time of a nationwide census in 2016, prompting the Iranian government-linked Press TV to cover the apparent astonishing case.
There has been no verified claim of anyone living beyond the age of 122, with Jeanne Calment of France (1875-1997) possessing the longest lifespan of any person in history, at 122 years and 164 days.
Women live longer than men on average and records which include both sexes are dominated by women.
Despite this, Iranian state media have not challenged the longevity claim.
Soufi was reportedly born on 27 February 1882 and lived in the city Saqqez.
The alleged supercentenarian had biological children of his own and adopted five children after marrying in 1996.
