Trump has said that the US "totally obliterated" military facilities on Iran's Kharg Island, threatening to do the same to oil installations

The US has launched large-scale strikes on Iran's Kharg Island in the Gulf, with President Donald Trump saying that it had "totally obliterated every MILITARY target" on the Island.

"I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island," he said on his Truth Social site, adding, "However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision."

Iran's Fars news agency said that the island's oil infrastructure, which is the export terminal for 90 percent of Iranian oil shipments, had not been damaged, and that the US " tried to damage the army's defences, the Joshan naval base, the airport control tower and the helicopter hangar of the Iranian Continental Shelf Oil Company."

Iran's military said that it would respond to any strikes against Iranian oil facilities with attacks on US-linked firms, which would "immediately be destroyed and turned into a pile of ashes."

Amid the expansion of the war, US media reports that the US is sending Marines to the Gulf, with the Wall Street Journal saying that the USS Tripoli and 2,500 Marines were en route.

Russia is supplying Iran with Shahed drones, Zelenskiy says
2:59 AM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Russia is supplying Iran with Shahed drones to use against the U.S. and Israel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told CNN in an interview excerpt aired on Saturday.

Zelenskiy told CNN's Fareed Zakaria that it is "100% facts" that Iran has used Russian-made Shaheds to attack U.S. bases.

Shahed drones have been linked to other attacks on countries in the region, although their manufacturers are not always clear.

Iran pioneered the Shahed drone, a much cheaper alternative to expensive missiles. They first saw mass use in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, where thousands of them have been launched by Russian forces since fall 2022, according to the Ukrainians.

Although Iran initially provided the drones, Russia now manufactures its own Shaheds. The armed forces of other countries have since adopted Shahed-type drones, including the U.S. military, which has said they are part of the current campaign against Iran.

Formula 1 cancels Bahrain, Saudi Arabia races amid Iran war
10:21 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Formula 1 and its governing body FIA canceled Grand Prix races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia on safety grounds related to the Iran war.

Both countries have been struck during Iran’s response after the United States and Israel launched a wave of attacks on Iran.

The announcement was made early Sunday morning in Shanghai ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix.

F1 was due to race in Bahrain on April 12 and in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah on April 19.

The FIA said the two races "will not take place in April" and that no replacements would be organised.

"The FIA will always place the safety and well being of our community and colleagues first. After careful consideration, we have taken this decision with that responsibility firmly in mind," FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said.

The FIA didn’t explicitly rule out rescheduling the races, and Ben Sulayem said: "Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are incredibly important to the ecosystem of our racing season, and I look forward to returning to both as soon as circumstances allow."

Dubai tourism takes a hit amid Iran war
10:04 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Dubai's usually crowded markets, beaches and waterfront promenades are unusually quiet during what is typically the city’s busy tourism season.

The spillover of the Iran war has disrupted air travel across the Middle East, while Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting sites in the United Arab Emirates have dented the country’s image as one of the region’s safest destinations.

As a result, some of Dubai’s most popular tourist areas — including the Al Seef waterfront market along Dubai Creek and beaches near luxury hotels, such as the Burj Al Arab — have seen far fewer visitors than usual.

US regulator threatens broadcasters over Iran war coverage
9:47 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The top US broadcast regulator on Saturday threatened media outlets over negative coverage of the Middle East war, after President Donald Trump slammed critical headlines from the "Fake News Media."

The president, since his first term, has derided mainstream media as "fake news" and has sued major outlets over what he sees as unfair coverage.

Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) -- which oversees US radio, television, and internet media -- said broadcasters risked losing their licenses over news coverage.

"The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not," Carr said in a post on X.

"Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions -- also known as the fake news -- have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up."

Carr's statement did not single out any news outlet, but it included a Trump social media post in which the president called out "an intentionally misleading headline by the Fake News Media" on five tanker planes hit by Iran strikes in Saudi Arabia.

6:16 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Iran's foreign minister said Saturday that there was "no problem" with the Islamic republic's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who US officials say was wounded.

On Friday, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said he believed Khamenei, who took power after his father was killed in a strike at the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran, "is wounded and likely disfigured."

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told MS NOW's Ayman Mohyeldin "there is no problem with the new supreme leader. He sent his message yesterday, and he will perform his duties."

Iranian officials have previously confirmed reports that the new leader is wounded but have given no further details.

Khamenei, 56, has not been seen in public since the airstrike that killed his father and predecessor as supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, and several key family members.

But on Thursday, he issued a written statement, in which he said his wife, sister, her child, and his brother-in-law were killed. He vowed to avenge the deaths since the start of the war with the United States and Israel.

He also emphasised Iran's potential to cause havoc across the region by squeezing oil supplies and using regional proxies.

Iran 'not taking responsibility' for missile fire on Turkey
5:35 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

"Once again, they are not taking responsibility for this incident. They claim they did not order any such attack, nor are they linked to it," Fidan said.

"Of course, there is technical data available... and we are discussing the discrepancy between their statements and the reality with them," he said, adding it was being discussed at a diplomatic and military level.

Turkey would resist all provocations, but as a nation, its deterrence capacities were "extremely strong", he warned, saying: "We always know exactly where and when to use our strength."

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Two Indian-flagged tankers carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz, India's shipping ministry said Saturday, marking a rare exception in the critical naval chokepoint disrupted by the Mideast war.

Tehran has all but halted maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas normally pass.

"They crossed the Strait of Hormuz early morning safely and are en route to India," Rajesh Kumar Sinha, India's special secretary of the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways told reporters at a news briefing in New Delhi on Saturday.

The tankers "Shivalik" and "Nanda Devi", carrying around 92,700 metric tonnes of LPG, are expected to arrive in the next couple of days and are bound for the western ports of Mundra and Kandla.

India is the world's fourth largest buyer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and second-largest buyer of LPG, which is used for cooking and predominantly sourced from the Middle East.

Deputy governor Jahaniyan said that after the attacks "daily life and routine activities of the residents are also fully maintained."

The attack "did not cause any casualties among military personnel, company employees, or residents of Kharg island, he added.

Japan asks Australia to boost LNG output amid Iran crisis
10:54 AM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Japan's industry minister Ryosei Akazawa on Saturday asked Australia, Japan's biggest supplier of liquefied natural gas, to boost output in light of the Middle East crisis.

Japan relies on the Middle East for around 11 percent of its LNG imports, with 6 percent shipped via the Strait of Hormuz, which is effectively closed due to the US-Israeli war on Iran. Japan also depends on the region for about 95 percent of its crude oil supplies.

Some 20 percent of global LNG supply is offline as the US-Israeli war on Iran has shut QatarEnergy LNG facilities, disrupting energy supplies from the Middle East. It could take months to return to normal deliveries, Qatari Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said last week.

"For this unprecedented situation, the affordable and stable LNG supply from Australia is the lifeline of energy security in Japan and this region," Akazawa told Australian Resources Minister Madeleine King during their bilateral meeting.

"We would like to sincerely ask for your continued contribution to stable supply, including the possibility of increasing production as much as possible," Akazawa said.

But as the US strikes on Iran persisted, Tehran launched a new wave of drone and missile attacks on Israel and its Gulf neighbours.
