US: Ted Cruz revives push to label Muslim Brotherhood a 'terror' group
US Senator Ted Cruz has introduced a new bill that would designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organisation, aiming to ban the group entirely and target its financial networks.
The "Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act of 2025" directs the Secretary of State to identify and list Brotherhood-affiliated branches already designated as terrorist entities, and to add others that meet the criteria.
It also calls for designating the broader global organisation for its alleged support to such groups.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, the legislation outlines a "modernised strategy," focusing on a bottom-up approach to applying sanctions on the Brotherhood’s international branches.
The bill has reportedly gained support from several Republican senators. Pro-Israel lobbying groups, including AIPAC, Christians United for Israel, and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, have also expressed backing for the initiative.
The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, says its aim is to promote Islamic governance through peaceful political participation. It is banned in several Arab countries, including Egypt and, more recently, Jordan.
Cruz previously introduced a similar bill in 2017 with Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, urging then-Secretary of State John Kerry to officially label the group a terrorist organisation.
