Celebrity fans showed their support for Palestine or Israel at the annual NBA All-Star game this weekend, in a star-studded basketball match watched by millions across the world.

Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving wore a t-shirt emblazoned with the word 'PRESS', in a reference to Israel's war on Gaza, which has been the bloodiest on record for media workers.

The NBA All-Star weekend sees the sport's international and American athletes compete in a high-profile match.

"Dedicated to our beloved journalists in Gaza showing the world the truth," the writing on the player's shirt read.

Nearly 300 journalists have been killed since Israel's blitz on Gaza began in October 2023, which has killed at least 72,000 Palestinians, the vast majority women and children, and reduced cities to rubble.

Irving has shown his support for Gaza before, wearing jewellery and keffiyehs to support the Palestinian cause at public events, and condemning Israeli oppression.

Film director Spike Lee, meanwhile, sported a Palestinian flag and keffiyeh top as he sat courtside at the NBA event, in full view of the cameras.

Basketball legend Lebron James, again, was criticised for voicing support for Israel at a press conference, where he praised Deni Avdija, who became the first Israeli basketball player to compete in an NBA All-Star match.

"If I have fans over there  (Israel) - I've never been there - I hope you've been following my career. I hope I inspire people over there to not only want to be great at sports but be better in general in life," he told reporters.

"Hopefully, someday I could make it over there. Like I said, I’ve never been over there, but I heard great things."

Journalist Mehdi Hasan tweeted "what a disgrace LeBron is", the basketball player's latest vocal support for Israel following a tweet condemning the 7 October attacks in 2023.

Writer and activist Shaun King wrote an article entitled: 'LeBron Just Handed Israel a Disgusting Propaganda Clip They’ll Use for Years. He's Either a Fool, a Zionist, or Both', in a scathing attack on the NBA star's alleged support for Israel.

Unlike other sports, very few NBA players have spoken out against the war on Gaza, which has been put down to athletes' fears about losing sponsorship and strict censorship by governing bodies.
