MMA fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov's father passes away from coronavirus complications

The father and trainer of Mixed Martials Arts fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov has passed away at the age of 57 from coronavirus complications. 

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov died in the Moscow hospital to which he was transferred after coming down with pneumonia-like symptoms at the end of April, RT reported.

The world-renowned trainer has received touching tributes from fans and journalists around the world.

Khabib, a devout Muslim from Russia's Dagestan region, was coached for many years by his father before defeating Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor last year, winning one of the biggest shows in UFC history. 

His death was first announced by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov on Friday, RT reported.

Nurmagomedov fell ill at the end of April in his home republic of Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus.

He was transferred by to a military hospital in Moscow by plane, according to RT, where he then tested positive for coronavirus and suffered a heart attack.

He was put into a medically induced coma following heart surgery and despite waking from the coma, later succumbed to the disease.

Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus emerged as a coronavirus hotspot in May.

As Dagestan's biggest celebrity, Khabib Nurmagomedov appealed to residents at the time to follow containment rules as his father was put on a ventilator after catching the coronavirus.

The undefeated UFC lightweight champion took to Instagram to urge people in the southern Russian region to be "disciplined" and to "listen to our doctors" during the epidemic.
