Fans were left astonished after Palestinian-American supermodel Gigi Hadid donned a voluminous red puffer-style coat on top of a body-hugging catsuit at this year's Met Gala.

The 27-year-old’s outfit for the annual event, dubbed the fashion Oscars, was designed by Versace as a nod to the exaggerated silhouettes of women’s clothing in the 1800s.

Hadid said the puffer coat was the “heaviest thing I’ve ever worn to the Met” to Vogue, adding: “But I’ll do anything for Donatella.”

Fashion fans mostly praised the supermodel’s standout red outfit on social media, listing it among their favourites alongside Blake Lively's rose strapless gown and Kim Kardashian's Marilyn Monroe look.

However, some jokingly compared it to a sleeping bag or a sofa, quickly turning the coat into a meme.

Monday’s Met Gala theme ‘Gilded Glamour’ saw a host of famous faces, including Lizzo, Hilarity Clinton and Cynthia Erivo, arrive in gowns with playful twists on the opulence of New York’s most lavish period.

British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed, however, took a different approach wearing an understated dark shirt, white undershirt and black boots.

“This is a shout out to the immigrant workers who kept the Gilded Age golden,” he said to Vogue.

Ahmed told reporters that his necklace was “inspired” by Islamic jewellery from India.

The outfit was heralded by Vogue as a reflection of the reality of “rampant exploitation” in America’s Gilded Age and a statement on the continued persecution faced by immigrants today.

A ticket for New York's hottest fashion event on Monday cost around $35,000, and the VIP guest list is vetted by American Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

The Met Gala received strong criticism online this year for being insensitive over its celebration of glamour at a time of rising food prices and vast inequality for the majority of Americans and many across the world.
