May Day demonstrations are planned in more than a thousand locations across all 50 states and Puerto Rico as opposition grows against an increasingly hardline US administration.
With this week marking 100 days since Donald Trump's inauguration, the US president is seeing historically low poll numbers reflecting growing discontent across the country.
Among the organisers for this week's May Day demonstrations are 50501 (pronounced fifty-fifty-one for 50 protests in 50 states on one day), Rising Majority, and local labour unions and immigrant rights groups. Events will also be held virtually.
"This May Day is more important than ever. We've witnessed mass deportations," Nadia Alyafia, an organiser with the Chicago-based Arab American Action Network, told The New Arab.
"We know these attacks won't stop with one community. We plan to have a huge visible contingent of Arabs and Palestinians marching on this day to show that the fight for freedom and liberation is universal," she said, adding that Arabs and Hispanics are working closely together in May Day demonstrations.
May Day, an annual recognition of workers' rights in commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket riot and general strike in Chicago, is being observed this year as many ordinary Americans are struggling to make ends meet and thousands of federal workers have lost their jobs to government cutbacks. At the same time, millions of immigrants face uncertainty as the Trump administration ramps up deportations, which in recent days has included US citizens.
In addition to protesting the US president, a major target of the May Day protests will be Trump megadonor Elon Musk, whose Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has dismissed government employees en masse.
Fighting the power of multi-billionaires, or the oligarchy as it's increasingly called, has galvanised protesters with a straightforward message and target.
"Trump and his billionaire profiteers are trying to create a race to the bottom—on wages, on benefits, on dignity itself," according to a statement by May Day National Day of Action.
"This May Day we are fighting back. We are demanding a country that puts our families over their fortunes—public schools over private profits, healthcare over hedge funds, prosperity over free market politics," the statement continued.
