What happened to the missing Malaysian actress who disappeared at Jeddah airport?
A Malaysian actress has been reported missing in the Saudi city of Jeddah since Thursday, prompting reports to be filed with both Malaysian and Saudi authorities.
Malaysian media said Kuala Lumpur police received a report regarding the disappearance of Nadia Kesuma, whose real name is Nadia Kasumawati Abdul Karim, after she went missing at King Abdulaziz International Airport.
Reports cited police chief M Ravi as saying the complaint was lodged by a family member at police headquarters on Friday and that investigations are ongoing.
Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan later confirmed Kesuma’s disappearance on Saturday, after she could not be traced while transiting at the airport during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to London on Thursday.
Hasan added that Saudi immigration officials had confirmed the actress had exited the airport and is classified as a missing person after being uncontactable for more than 20 hours.
Malaysia’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Datuk Syed Bakri Syed Abdul Rahman, also confirmed that the case had been reported to Saudi police.
"We are awaiting the outcome of the investigation by the Saudi police," Abdul Rahman told Malaysian news agency Bernama.
According to Malaysian news outlet The Rakyat Post, citing actress and close friend Anne Abdullah, Kesuma travelled on Thursday night through a travel agency offering an Umrah and sightseeing package that included a stop in London.
The outlet reported that Kesuma was due to board a connecting flight from Jeddah to London and had messaged her husband, Muhammad Kamarul Kabilan Abdullah, to say she had landed safely in the Saudi city.
However, the travel agency later allegedly told him that she never boarded the plane.
The Rakyat Post added that Kesuma had previously told her husband she did not know anyone else on the trip, as she had travelled with friends on her last journey.
The New Arab was unable to independently verify the reports as of 17 January.
