Jordanian political parties are holding a hunger strike in solidarity with Gaza and have urged Jordanians to support Palestinians facing genocide.

The campaign, launched under the slogan "Empty Stomachs for Gaza", seeks to pressure governments and decision-makers to immediately halt Israel’s aggression.

Rula al-Hroub, secretary-general of the Labour Party, said on Tuesday that the strike will take place on 16 and 23 September.

Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Amman, she said the initiative aims to break the silence, helplessness, and despair felt by people around the world.

Eight political parties are taking part in the campaign, alongside the Jordanian Writers' Association.

The first day of the strike coincided with the anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, carried out by Phalangist and Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians in Beirut in 1982.

The protest came as Israel launched a ground invasion of Gaza City and intensified its carpet bombing of the surrounding suburbs.

Since beginning its operation to capture Gaza City in July, Israeli forces have killed thousands of people and levelled entire neighbourhoods, forcing tens of thousands to flee.

At least 64,964 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since 7 October 2023, while thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble. Israeli forces have destroyed most of Gaza, dismantled its healthcare system, and imposed famine across the enclave.

MSF holds show of solidarity

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in Jordan also staged a show of solidarity in Amman on Tuesday under the slogan “Doctors can’t stop the genocide. World leaders can.”

The organisation repeated its warning that Israel is committing systematic genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Israeli forces have killed 12 MSF staff members since the start of the war.

Orthopaedic surgeon Mohamed Obeid has been detained by Israel since October 2024.

"The policy of thirst and starvation, cutting off medical and humanitarian supplies, and targeting hospitals and relief teams are all tools Israel is using as part of its methodical genocide against the Palestinian people since the start of the war," Ines Abu Khalaf, head of MSF’s media office in Amman, told The New Arab's Arabic language edition.

As a humanitarian medical organisation, we now feel powerless. The least we can do here, from Amman, is to stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Gaza and with the entire Palestinian people.”
