Five people were reported killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza on Saturday in the latest violation of the two-month ceasefire.

A correspondent for Al Jazeera reported shelling Khan Younis and Gaza City.

The deaths came after Israeli forces struck a building housing displaced people in the Al-Tuffah suburb of Gaza City.

Gaza's Civil Defence said most of the victims were children.

In Syria, US forces struck more than 70 Islamic State group targets overnight on Friday in what President Donald Trump described as "very serious retaliation" for an attack that killed three Americans last weekend.

A Syria war monitor said at least five Islamic State members - including a cell leader - were killed in the strikes.

"The operation employed more than 100 precision munitions targeting known ISIS infrastructure and weapons sites," US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

The Jordanian military confirmed on Saturday that it had participated in the attacks.

Meanwhile, Syrian media reported a fresh incursion by Israeli forces into Quneitra in the south of the country on Saturday morning.

Soldiers in five Israeli vehicles entered the village of Ein Ziwan, set up a checkpoint and searched civilians, according to Syria TV.

Israeli forces have launched frequent raids into Syria in the year since they seized swathes of territory in the wake of the overthrow of the Assad regime.

Iraq top judge says armed factions to cooperate on weapons

The head of Iraq's highest judicial body said Saturday that the leaders of armed factions have agreed to cooperate on the sensitive issue of the state's monopoly on weapons.

However, the powerful Kataeb Hezbollah group said that it would only discuss giving up its arms when foreign troops leave the country.

"The resistance is a right, and its weapons will remain in the hands of its fighters," the group said in a statement.

The leaders of three other pro-Iran factions designated by Washington as terrorist groups said that it is time to restrict weapons to state control, although they too have stopped short of committing to disarm - a long-standing US demand.

Faiq Zidan, the head of Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council, in a statement thanked "faction leaders for heeding his advice to coordinate together to enforcing the rule of law, restrict weapons to state control, and transition to political action after the national need for military action has ceased".

Sudan PM heads to New York for UN talks

Sudan's Prime Minister Kamil Idris left for New York Saturday to meet the UN chief and other officials and discuss humanitarian access and a possible ceasefire, two government sources said.

The trip comes as fighting between Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which erupted in April 2023, intensifies in southern Kordofan, raising fears of new atrocities similar to those reported in the city of El-Fasher in late October.

Reports of mass killings, rape and abductions followed the RSF's capture of the army's last stronghold in the western Darfur region.

A Sudanese government source told AFP, on condition of anonymity, that Idris is expected to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, with the aim of "putting an end to the worsening humanitarian crisis" in Sudan.

Idris's adviser Mohamed Abdel Qader also told AFP the talks would focus on "facilitating aid access" and reaffirm the government's commitment to a roadmap handed over to the UN, including a "conditional ceasefire linked to the withdrawal of the RSF from areas and cities it occupies".

Two more buildings in the Gaza Strip previously damaged by Israeli strikes have collapsed in the enclave on Saturday.

The buildings' collapse was due to heavy rainfall in Gaza, where cold winter temperatures and storms have exacerbated living conditions.

Another building in the Nasr neighbourhood belonging to the Mughni family also collapsed.

No injuries have been reported from either incident.

Trump officials push 'Gaza Riviera' plan

The New Arab Staff

US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff have created a draft proposal to rebuild Gaza into a futuristic 'smart city' and tourism destination in what is the latest iteration of the president's much-derided 'Gaza Riviera' plan.

The proposal, seen by the Wall Street Journal, envisions more than $112 billion being invested to reconstruct the territory, which has been almost entirely destroyed by the Israeli military over the past two years.

Some US officials remain sceptical of the plan, with efforts to bring a permanent end to the conflict and begin reconstruction at a standstill.

Israel continues to violate the ceasefire on almost a daily basis and is threatening to renew its genocidal offensive if Hamas does not surrender its weapons.

Iran has put to death a man accused of spying for Israel, the latest execution since a 12-day June war between the archenemies, the judiciary's press agency announced Saturday.

Since the war, Iran has promised swift trials for those arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Israel. It has announced multiple arrests and the executions of at least ten people convicted of working with Mossad.
