Israeli settlers attack police at occupied West Bank checkpoint

An Israeli settler attacked a border police officer at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank overnight using tear gas, Israeli media reported.

The attacker was one of dozens of settlers who targeted the Giv'at Ronen police outpost near Nablus by throwing stones, obstructing police movement, and burning and slashing tires, Haaretz reported on Thursday, citing Israeli police.

Officers were conducting security operations in the area at the time, police said, adding that they were investigating the incident.

On the same day, in the Al-Issawiya neighbourhood, a 14-year-old Palestinian boy was shot and injured by Israeli police for allegedly throwing stones at a police car. He was then arrested.

Twenty-two Palestinians in the Al-Tour neighbourhood of East Jerusalem were also detained for allegedly throwing stones and chairs at police cars.

On Monday evening, Israeli settlers stormed through a Palestinian town near Nablus, damaging cars and business premises, injuring a local teenager. The mob was celebrating the release of an Israeli settler jailed for attacking Palestinians, according to CNN.

Settlers frequently attack Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank.

Last week, six people were wounded when masked settlers attacked a group of Palestinian and Israeli human rights activists with clubs and stones in the village of Burin, seven kilometres south of Nablus.

The activists were helping Palestinian farmers plant trees in areas that had previously been damaged or vandalised by settlers.
