UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency session on Iran following Israeli strikes on Iran- killing top members of Iran's armed forces.

Iran and Israel are launching mutual strikes against each other, with air defences engaging targets around Tehran and Tel Aviv being hit with multiple ballistic missiles.

Late on Friday, Iran launched missiles at Israel following Israeli strikes against Iranian nuclear and military sites earlier in the day, with dozens reported wounded. Iran says Israeli strikes on the country have killed 78 people.

The United Nations Security Council will reportedly meet later on Friday over Israel's strikes on Iran, unnamed diplomats told news agency Reuters, at the request of Tehran.

Israel launched an array of strikes against dozens of Iranian targets on Friday, hitting nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders during the start of an operation claimed to prevent Tehran from building a nuclear weapon.

This comes as US President Donald Trump urged Iran to make a deal on its nuclear program before it faced more attacks from Israel that he said would be "even more brutal."

Trump is scheduled to attend a security meeting at the White House at 11 a.m. (1500 GMT).
