Israeli forces renewed their artillery and aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing at least three Palestinians, in the latest breach of the ceasefire put in place three months ago.

One Palestinian was killed and another wounded after an Israeli drone struck the vicinity of the Bani Suheila roundabout in the centre of Khan Younis, in the enclave's south.

Two others were killed by Israeli gunfire east of Gaza City's neighbourhood.

Israeli forces also struck the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza, wounding several Palestinians.

Israeli troops stationed in the eastern areas of Gaza City opened fire with machine guns east of the Tuffah neighbourhood, while Israeli military helicopters fired on the eastern part of Jabalia in the enclave's north.

In the southern Gaza Strip, an Israeli fighter jet launched an airstrike on Rafah, while army vehicles opened fire north of the city, which is entirely under Israeli control.

This comes after Israeli troops killed at least 14 people on Thursday, who were targeted in displaced Palestinians' tents, homes, and an emergency shelter, in one of the army's biggest violations of the ceasefire so far. Hamas accused Israel's long-term ally, the US, of providing "cover" for the Israeli army following the incident.

Palestinians in Gaza are also suffering due to the continued harsh weather conditions. Heavy rains and strong winds have damaged scores of tents in the enclave, where hundreds of thousands of displaced people live.

Such conditions exacerbate the suffering families are subject to and increase the risk of illness.

Netanyahu hopes to 'taper off' Israel off US military aid
8:45 AM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview published on Friday that he hopes to "taper off" Israeli dependence on American military aid in the next decade.

Netanyahu has said Israel should not be reliant on foreign military aid but has stopped short of declaring a firm timeline for when Israel would be fully independent from the US.

"I want to taper off the military within the next 10 years," Netanyahu told The Economist. Asked if that meant a tapering "down to zero," he said, "Yes."

Netanyahu said he told President Donald Trump during a recent visit that Israel "very deeply" appreciates "the military aid that America has given us over the years, but here too we've come of age and we've developed incredible capacities."

In December, Netanyahu said Israel would spend 350 billion shekels ($110 billion) on developing an independent arms industry to reduce dependency on other countries.

In 2016, the U.S. and Israeli governments signed a memorandum of understanding for the 10 years through September 2028 that provides $38 billion in military aid, $33 billion in grants to buy military equipment and $5 billion for missile defence systems.
