At least 37 people have been killed in Gaza as Israel continues its bombardment of the enclave, with famine moving to a 'new phase'.

Israel continued bombing parts of Syria on Friday evening, as a 24-hour death toll from strikes on Gaza rose to 42.

Nine people were killed when an Israeli air strike hit a home in Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, civil defence official Mohammed al-Mughayyir told AFP.

Another six people were killed in a separate strike targeting the Al-Masri family home in the northern city of Beit Lahia, he added.

In Gaza City, a strike on a community kitchen claimed the lives of six more, the civil defence agency reported.

Elsewhere across the Gaza Strip, at least eight additional fatalities were reported in similar attacks, the agency said.

Meanwhile, the Government Media Office in Gaza announced that the Strip has entered an "advanced stage of famine" due to the ongoing Israeli siege and the closure of crossings preventing the entry of aid and goods since 2 March.

The Gaza health ministry said on Thursday that at least 2,326 people have been killed since Israel resumed strikes in March, bringing the overall death toll since the war broke out to 52,418.
