Iran on Sunday said it reserved all options to defend itself after unprecedented US strikes that President Donald Trump claimed had "obliterated" its key nuclear facilities.

Hours after Trump joined Israel's war on Iran by sending B-2 bombers to Iran, the Israeli military warned people to seek cover from an Iranian missile barrage that appeared heavier than the  salvoes fired in the past few days.

"The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences," said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, calling the US strikes a "grave violation" of the UN charter, international law and the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Israel's ambulance service said at least 16 people were hurt in the morning barrage.

Trump, in a televised address to the US people, flanked by Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, called the strikes a "spectacular military success" that had taken out Iran's three principal nuclear sites: Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow.

He warned Tehran it would face more devastating attacks if it does not agree to "peace".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Trump on his "bold decision", saying, "History will record that President Trump acted to deny the world's most dangerous regime, the world's most dangerous weapons."

A statement said that "approximately 30 IAF (air force) fighter jets struck dozens of military targets throughout Iran" -- including "the 'Imam Hussein' Strategic Missile Command Center in the Yazd area, where long-range Khorramshahr missiles were stored".

The statement also confirmed strikes on missile launchers in Bushehr province, where a "massive explosion" was reported by Iranian media on Sunday, as well as in Ahvaz in the southwest and central Isfahan.

Isfahan is home to a uranium conversion facility targeted by more than two dozen missiles fired from a US submarine in the Middle East overnight.

Rubio's comments on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo" show came after Iran's Press TV reported that the Iranian parliament approved a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20% of global oil and gas flows.

"I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the Straits of Hormuz for their oil," said Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser.

"If they do that, it will be another terrible mistake. It's economic suicide for them if they do it. And we retain options to deal with that, but other countries should be looking at that as well. It would hurt other countries' economies a lot worse than ours."

Rubio said a move to close the strait would be a massive escalation that would merit a response from the US and others.

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately provide comment.
