Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai said on Friday that "direct negotiations with Israel are necessary for peace," stressing that his call does not imply normalisation.

In an interview with the Lebanese broadcaster LBCI, Rai stated that Hezbollah and other militant groups' "disarmament is an irreversible decision."

He emphasised that "the state must address with Israel the issue of its withdrawal from the south" of Lebanon, while he reiterated that "direct negotiations with Israel are necessary for peace."

"By that, I do not mean normalisation," he said.

Rai also called on the government to ask the international community to extend the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) - whose mandate ends at the end of next year - saying: "We have not yet reached peace."

In a statement issued by its Foreign Ministry, Saudi Arabia said it "denounces and condemns the blatant assault carried out by the Israeli occupation forces on the town of Beit Jinn in rural Damascus."

The Kingdom reaffirmed its "complete rejection of all Israeli violations on Syrian territory and all attempts to destabilise Syria and its people."

Saudi Arabia also called on the international community and the permanent members of the UN Security Council to "confront Israel’s repeated violations in Syria and its aggressive practices against residents in villages and border areas."

It further urged the implementation of relevant international laws and resolutions that guarantee Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the security of its brotherly people.

50 nations, orgs participating in CMCC for Gaza: US military
8:01 PM
The New Arab Staff

The U.S. Central Command announced that 50 nations and international organisations are now represented in the Civil-Military Coordination Center established by Washington in southern Israel to monitor the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

"One month after achieving full operational capability, the U.S.-led Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) has grown to include representatives from 50 partner nations and international organisations," CENTCOM said on X.

"The coordination centre also facilitated the movement of more than 24,000 trucks worth of humanitarian aid and commercial goods into Gaza the past five weeks, while working to open additional routes for delivering and distributing needed goods and aid," it added.

CENTCOM’s remarks on the scale of aid deliveries, however, stand in contrast to the actual humanitarian situation in Gaza and to figures released by the authorities in the enclave, which assert that a deliberate policy of starvation is still ongoing.

Hezbollah leader leaves open possibility of war with Israel
6:38 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The head of Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said on Friday it retained the right to respond to Israel's killing days ago of its top military commander and left open the possibility of a new war with Israel.

Speaking in a televised address, Naim Qassem said the group would "set the timing" for any retaliation, and said threats of a broader air campaign had no impact on the group - but that renewed war was possible.

"Do you expect a war later? It's possible sometime. Yes, this possibility is there, and the possibility of no war is also there," Qassem said.

Qassem did not explicitly say what the group's position would be in a new war but said Lebanon should prepare a plan to confront Israel that relies on "its army and its people."

Moments after Qassem's speech ended, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee claimed the Lebanese army's efforts to seize Hezbollah weapons in the country's south were "inadequate."

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to Israel on 6 and 7 December for his first official visit since taking office, a German government spokesperson said on Friday.

Merz is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on 7 December to discuss bilateral relations, the ceasefire in Gaza and other international issues, and will also visit the Yad Vashem memorial and hold talks with local representatives from society, the spokesperson added during a regular government press conference.

Germany has long been one of Israel's staunchest supporters, but has also criticised Netanyahu's government over its strategy in the devastating Gaza war.

This month, the German government moved to resume weapons sales to Israel that had been suspended since August over the war, but said the decision is subject to the observance of the ceasefire and the large-scale provision of humanitarian aid.

Amnesty says Israel 'still committing genocide' in Gaza
8:00 AM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Amnesty International on Thursday claimed Israel was "still committing genocide" against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, despite the ceasefire agreed last month.

"The ceasefire risks creating a dangerous illusion that life in Gaza is returning to normal," said Amnesty chief Agnes Callamard.

"But while Israeli authorities and forces have reduced the scale of their attacks and allowed limited amounts of humanitarian aid into Gaza, the world must not be fooled. Israel's genocide is not over."

When faced with such allegations previously, the Israeli ministry has vehemently rejected them as "entirely false", "fabricated", and "based on lies".

The fragile, US-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas came into effect on 10 October, after two years of war.

Contacted by AFP, the Israeli foreign ministry did not respond to the allegations by early evening.
