An Israeli airstrike early on Sunday targeted the emergency and reception wing of the al-Ahli Arab Hospital, commonly known as the Baptist Hospital, in central Gaza City, throwing the facility completely out of service.

The bombing forced dozens of patients, including those in critical condition, into the streets. At least one child reportedly died during the evacuation.

The hospital, already operating under extreme conditions, was a vital point of care in the enclave, where health infrastructure has been systematically dismantled during over six months of Israeli bombardment.

Israel has deliberately destroyed 34 hospitals across the Strip as part of what it described as a “systematic plan” to eliminate Gaza’s healthcare system, according to Gaza's media office.

Hamas condemned the bombing as a “new war crime”, accusing the Israeli military of committing "brutal atrocities" with US support.

The Israeli strike came as forces issued new forced expulsion orders targeting neighbourhoods in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza and southern Khan Younis. Palestinians from several areas, including al-Iman, al-Taqwa, al-Basateen, al-Zahraa, al-Bawadi, and al-Nuzha, were forced to evacuate ahead of deadly attacks.

As the death toll on the ground surpasses at least 61,700 killed and over 115,00 wounded, a Hamas delegation is in Cairo participating in ceasefire talks mediated by Egypt.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday lashed out at French President Emmanuel Macron over his plans to recognise a Palestinian state.

"President Macron is gravely mistaken in continuing to promote the idea of a Palestinian state in the heart of our land -- a state whose sole aspiration is the destruction of Israel," Netanyahu said in a statement.

He was addressing Macron's remarks earlier this week in which he said that France could recognise a Palestinian state within months.

Yair Netanyahu, the son of the Israeli prime minister, lashed out at French President Emmanuel Macron after he said Paris could recognise a Palestinian state within months.

"Screw you!" Benjamin Netanyahu's son wrote in English on the social media platform X late on Saturday.

"Yes to independence of New Caledonia! Yes to independence to French Polynesia! Yes to independence of Corsica! Yes to independence of the Basque Country! Yes to independence of French Guinea!" he added, apparently confusing it with French Guiana.

Macron, in an interview to France 5 broadcast on Wednesday, stated that France could take the step during a UN conference in New York in June, saying he hoped this would trigger a reciprocal recognition of Israel by Arab countries.

"We must move towards recognition, and we will do so in the coming months," Macron said.

"I will do it because I believe that at some point it will be right and because I also want to participate in a collective dynamic, which must also allow all those who defend Palestine to recognise Israel in turn, which many of them do not do."

UAE's MbZ says wants to support Syria reconstruction
6:12 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The president of the United Arab Emirates said his country wants to support Syria's reconstruction as he met Sunday with interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan "affirmed the UAE's keenness to support... Syria to confront the challenges of the transitional phase and rebuild Syria" during the meeting, the official Emirati news agency WAM reported.

Sharaa has sought Gulf financial support for war-devastated Syria since he led a lightning offensive that toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December.

But nearly a week after rebels toppled Assad, UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash said his government found the Islamist affiliation of Syria's new rulers "quite worrying".

In mid-January Sharaa spoke by phone with the UAE president about ways to reinforce ties and "ensure the stability and development of the region", Syria's state news agency SANA said at the time.

"Syria's stability and enhanced security are in the interest of the entire region," the UAE president was quoted as saying on Sunday.

He added that the Gulf country would "spare no effort in providing all possible support to Syria and its brotherly people in the coming period".

On its Telegram channel, SANA on Sunday said Sharaa was travelling with Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani to the UAE to hold talks on "numerous common issues".

Analysts have said the UAE is deeply suspicious of Syria's new leaders, reflecting its distrust of political Islam and fear of outsized Turkish influence in the war-scarred country.

Shaibani visited Abu Dhabi in January.

After more than 13 years of conflict, Syria's new rulers are seeking international support for reconstruction and reviving the sanctions-hit economy.

Survivors describe horror of strike on Baptist hospital
5:24 PM
The New Arab Staff

In the early hours of Sunday, Israeli forces bombed Al-Ahli Arab (Baptist) Hospital, the last functioning central medical facility in northern Gaza, in an attack that has drawn outrage from health officials, church leaders, and survivors.

The hospital, affiliated with the Anglican Church and previously operating around the clock, was forced completely out of service following the attack, further collapsing Gaza's already devastated healthcare infrastructure.

The bombing targeted critical departments, including the emergency ward, surgical and reception areas, laboratory, radiology, and central pharmacy. Survivors say the Israeli army issued a last-minute evacuation warning by phone to some individuals nearby - not directly to the hospital - leaving medical staff and patients with only 20 to 30 minutes to flee in the darkness. Many were too injured or immobile to escape.

"Now, they are nothing but missing bodies," the statement read. "We still wonder: When will the death in the Gaza Strip stop? And how long will this international failure continue?"
