Cyprus said on Wednesday a suspect object had been detected close to Lebanese airspace, and a government source said two Greek F16 fighter jets had been scrambled to intercept it.

Two aircraft that were preparing to land at Cyprus' Larnaca airport were diverted while the jets were scrambled, the government source said. The incident followed a strike by an unnamed Iran-made drone on a British RAF base in Akrotiri in Cyprus on Monday as the U.S. and Israeli air war against Iran continued, and two other drones were intercepted by Cyprus later that day.

Cypriot officials said they believed the drones were fired by Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Sri Lanka rescued 32 "critically wounded" sailors aboard the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, which sank Wednesday just outside the island's territorial waters, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said.

No information was immediately available on the cause of the explosion that sank the vessel, but Herath told parliament that the injured sailors were taken to a hospital in the island's south.

The 180-crew frigate had issued a distress call at dawn.

Sri Lanka's defence ministry said it was searching for the other crew of the IRIS Dena, which went down about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the island.

"We are keeping up a search, but we don't know yet what happened to the rest of the crew," an official told AFP, dimming prospects for finding any more survivors.

Herath said two Sri Lankan navy vessels and an aircraft were deployed for the rescue operation, but did not say what caused the Iranian warship to sink.

Kuwait's health ministry said Wednesday an 11-year-old girl was killed after being hit by falling shrapnel following waves of Iranian attacks across the Gulf.

The Gulf has borne the brunt of much of Tehran's response since the US and Israel launched a massive air campaign against Iran over the weekend with at least nine people killed in the region in the fallout.

At least four US soldiers have also been killed in Kuwait and the US embassy there was targeted by drones, while its energy infrastructure has also been hit in recent days.

"Resuscitation was performed in the ambulance while the girl was being transported to the hospital, and attempts continued for nearly half an hour upon arrival at Al-Amiri Hospital. However, she passed away due to her injuries," said the ministry in a statement posted on X.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday he believed that Israeli-US strikes on Iran were not consistent with international law.

Speaking at a gathering of the Lowy Institute think tank in Sydney, Carney said Canada welcomed steps to change Iran's form of government - which he said represented the "principal source of instability and terror" in the Middle East.

"It would appear, prima facie, not to be consistent or to be inconsistent with international law," Carney told a gathering at the Lowy Institute in Sydney.

"It's a judgement for others to make," he added.

"I'm not a lawyer, let alone an international legal expert."
