Israeli authorities on Sunday barred two Palestinian women from bringing their new-born babies with them, as they attempted to leave the West Bank for Jordan, according to the Palestinian Authority's (PA) ministry of foreign affairs.
The two babies were registered on their mothers' documents with the Palestinian ministry of interior, but were turned away at the Israeli-controlled King Hussein border crossing with Jordan, as they were not registered with Israeli authorities.
The foreign ministry strongly condemned Israel's actions and asserted the right of the babies to stay with their mothers.
They said the women travelled to Jordan to be reunited with their husbands who work in the UAE, after giving birth in the Palestinian territories.
"This stance by the occupation state is a violation and an infringement of the Geneva Conventions, which guarantee freedom of movement of people under occupation, particularly since the two women carry valid documents for themselves and their babies issued by the State of Palestine, which is under occupation," said the foreign ministry's Ahmad Al-Dik.
Prior to ending all coordination with Israel in response to its planned annexation of the West Bank, the PA would register births with Israeli authorities.
