Israel arrests woman suspected of plotting Netanyahu assassination
An elderly woman was recently arrested by Israeli authorities on suspicion of plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to local media.
The suspect is accused of conspiring with others to target the prime minister with an explosive device, public broadcaster Kan reported on Wednesday.
She was arrested by the security services two weeks ago and interrogated by Shin Bet. A court is expected to indict her on Thursday on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism.
The woman's identity and other details about the case remain confidential.
The suspect's legal team declined to comment on the charges.
"We have not received the indictment and the evidence material, and at this stage we cannot comment on the suspicions," they said.
In a related case, a 72-year-old Israeli businessman was handed a 10-year jail sentence in April after being found guilty of working with Iranian intelligence to carry out attacks in Israel.
Moti Maman was convicted of illegally entering Iran and discussing plans to assassinate senior Israeli officials, including Netanyahu, former defence minister Yoav Gallant and former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar.
It is unclear whether the government believes Iran was involved in latest alleged assassination attempt.
