Crowds roar for YouTuber IShowSpeed’s surprise appearance at AFCON
Popular liverstreamer and YouTuber IShowSpeed, real name Darren Jason Watkins Jr, garnered attention worldwide after he made a surprise appearance at the final of the African Cup of Nations on Sunday, marking the last stop on his tour of Africa.
Speed, as he is widely known, has amassed a cult following on social media, where the 20-year-old has been sharing his travels across Africa for the last 28 days. Highlights of his livestreams include visiting the Shaolin Temple in Zambia and enjoying a helicopter ride above Kenya.
However, it was his appearance at the Morocco vs Senegal match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium that caught people's attention.
Fans erupted in cheers when Speed was seen dressed as the mascot, Assad, an African lion, and later in the Morocco away kit.
In December, the American streamer posted a trailer for the tour, saying he would visit 20 countries across the continent, hoping to showcase a side of countries that were not often portrayed in the media.
As well as Morocco, his stops included Algeria, South Africa, and Egypt, where he reportedly became the first person to livestream inside the Pyramids of Giza.
In Egypt, he donned a traditional galabiya, ventured around the streets of Cairo, tried street food, and interacted with locals. His feature of Egyptian culture and heritage in his videos, such as the Tanoura dance, has earned him praise online.
"I want to show the world what Africa really is," Speed said during his time in South Africa.
While some have dismissed his tour as a gimmick and labelled him an entertainer, young boys were emotional when welcoming him in Rwanda and Ethiopia, declaring that they had met their hero.
This isn't Speed's first big tour. In 2025 alone, he toured South America, the United States, and China, in addition to kicking off the Africa tour.
The streamer is also known for his pro-Palestine stance and opposition to Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza. He often says "Free Palestine" in gaming livestreams and has donated $50,000 to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund in 2024.
The YouTuber’s popularity has skyrocketed over the years, often going viral due to the "chaotic" and energetic nature of his streaming. Known for his diverse range of content, IShowSpeed posts gaming, travel, and IRL (lifecasting) videos. The YouTuber’s popularity has also been credited to building connections with his fan base through direct interactions.
The streamer’s presence has crossed over into other industries and fan spaces, including football, and has participated in several sporting events, including charity events.
He has also gained popularity for showcasing different countries and cultures through his streams, often being labelled as a "cultural ambassador" for such.
