The Iraqi Embassy in Saudi Arabia issued a statement today regarding a social media video featuring Ambassador Safia Talib Al-Suhail.
Some posts alleged the video showed "undiplomatic behaviour" toward an official Iraqi delegation.
According to the statement, the ambassador and Iraqi delegation attending the Saudi Defence Exhibition 2026 hosted an event at the embassy’s official residence.
The gathering included Saudi dignitaries and members of the Iraqi community. The embassy emphasised that Iraq was the host, and Saudi guests attended by invitation.
The embassy clarified that the event followed diplomatic customs, with seating arranged by precedence. The occasion was social and introductory, not a formal protocol ceremony.
The statement noted that the video was taken out of context. It showed the ambassador and delegation moving within the residence to invite guests to dinner, in line with the social traditions of both countries. The embassy stated this scene was misinterpreted and did not reflect the actual event.
The embassy explained that the ambassador's and delegation’s movements signalled that the invitation included both Saudi guests and all Iraqi delegation members. This was a routine organisational procedure consistent with hospitality customs, with no breach of protocol or precedence.
The embassy emphasised that the meeting was conducted in a friendly atmosphere, reflecting strong Iraq–Saudi Arabia relations and mutual respect. All actions followed international diplomatic practices, preserving Iraq’s standing and showing full appreciation for the guests.
The embassy affirmed its right to clarify any incomplete or inaccurate public information to maintain transparency and uphold the fraternal relationship between the two countries.
Parliament Orders Investigation
Following the event in Riyadh, Parliament Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi directed the formation of an investigative committee, requested communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and called for the Iraqi ambassador in Saudi Arabia to be summoned within 48 hours.
Iraqi social media users are divided over the video. One group stated that the invitation occurred at the ambassador’s residence and that, in Iraqi culture, it is customary for the host to stand and greet guests, which shows respect and does not breach diplomatic protocol.
The other group argues the ambassador and staff violated diplomatic etiquette, suggesting Iraq was "belittled" while Saudis were seated and Iraqis stood.
