Iran has sent its response to a U.S. proposal aimed at ending the more than two-month war to mediator, Pakistan, Iran's IRNA news agency said on Sunday.

According to Iran's proposal, the current phase of negotiations will focus exclusively on the cessation of hostilities in the region, a source familiar with the matter told IRNA.

Sources in both camps have told Reuters the latest peace efforts are aimed at a temporary memorandum of understanding to halt the war and allow traffic through the Strait of Hormuz while they discuss a fuller deal, which would have to address intractable disputes such as Iran's nuclear programme.

Drones were launched at several targets in the Gulf on Sunday, with one hitting a freighter sailing towards Qatar. Kuwait also reported an attempted attack at dawn.

The United Arab Emirates said that its territory had also come under attack, and called out Iran by name. "UAE air defence systems successfully engaged two UAVs launched from Iran," the defence ministry said, in a social media post.

US President Donald Trump is set to press Chinese President Xi Jinping on Iran when he visits Beijing in coming days, a senior administration official said Sunday, as Trump seeks a deal to end the Middle East war.

Trade, tariffs and AI are also set to feature during the visit from Wednesday to Friday, during which Trump will visit Beijing's iconic Temple of Heaven, according to the White House.

"I would expect the president to apply pressure" over Iran, the official told reporters on a call, adding that the US leader has done so in previous calls with his Chinese counterpart.

The official said Trump had brought up Chinese revenue for Iran and Russia through oil sales "multiple times" with Xi, as well as sales of military-civilian dual-role goods.

"I expect that conversation to continue," the official added.

Recent US sanctions on China over the Iran war are also likely to come up, added the official.

Lebanon says two paramedics killed by Israeli strikes

Lebanon's health ministry said two paramedics from the Islamic Health Committee were killed and five others wounded on Sunday in two Israeli strikes on the country's south despite a ceasefire.

As the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling on a variety of other south Lebanon areas, Israel's army warned residents of three villages to evacuate, saying it would act forcefully against the Iran-backed group there.

Israel has kept up strikes despite a ceasefire in place since April 17 that was supposed to halt hostilities with Hezbollah, while the group has pressed on with its own attacks, mainly on Israeli troops operating in southern Lebanon but also across the border.

A Lebanese health ministry statement said that Israel "directly targeted, with two strikes, two Health Committee sites", killing one paramedic and wounding three others in Qalaway, and killing another paramedic and wounding two others in Tibnin.

The statement decried what it called Israel's continued "violation of international laws".

Indian PM calls for fuel cuts amid Middle East war fears
6:12 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged the people of India to cut down on petrol and diesel consumption amid supply disruptions due to the Middle East war.

India is one of few countries in the region that has not increased prices of petrol and diesel for domestic consumers or rationed supplies.

But it has increased prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) -- a primary cooking fuel in this country -- after disruptions following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which led to Iran's near-total blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

"We have to reduce our use of petrol and diesel. In cities with metro lines, we should try to travel by metro...If we must use a car, then we should try to car pool," he said, addressing a gathering in southern Telangana state.

He added that restrictions on use were also necessary to save foreign currency spent on fuel imports.

"We must also place a strong emphasis on saving foreign exchange, as petrol and diesel have become so expensive globally."

Modi also urged people to resume energy-saving schemes that were in place during the Covid pandemic.

"We should prioritise work from home, online conferences, and virtual meetings again," he said.

Trump says US would need two weeks to hit all Iran targets
4:14 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

US President Donald Trump has said in an interview aired Sunday that it would only take two weeks to hit "every single target" in Iran, adding that the Islamic republic was "militarily defeated."

In the interview with independent journalist Sharyl Attkisson, which was recorded last week, he also called NATO a "paper tiger" and accused Washington's allies of failing to assist in the campaign against Tehran.

"They're militarily defeated. In their own minds, maybe they don't know that. But I think they do," Trump said in the interview, before adding: "That doesn't mean they're done."

He suggested the US military could "go in for two more weeks and do every single target. We have certain targets that we wanted, and we've done probably 70 percent of them, but we have other targets that we could conceivably hit."

"But even if we didn't do that, you know, that would just be final touches," Trump said.

Assad official charged with acts 'amounting to war crimes'
2:40 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Syria's judiciary brought charges on Sunday against former security official Atif Najib for acts "amounting to war crimes" in 2011 against peaceful protesters in Daraa province, the cradle of the country's uprising.

Najib was the former head of political security in the south Syrian province and is accused of orchestrating a crackdown there. Washington sanctioned him for human rights abuses in April 2011, one month after the uprising erupted.

He appeared in a Damascus criminal court again on Sunday after the opening session last month in the trials of former senior figures, most prominently longtime president Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher al-Assad, who are both being tried in absentia.

Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan read out the charges at Sunday's session, part of which was broadcast on state television, as Najib stood in the docks.

"The accusations against you relate to events in Daraa province in early 2011, when the peaceful (protest) movement was met with an excessive use of force," Aryan said.

"As head of the political security branch then, you held direct and joint leadership responsibility for systematic acts that targeted civilians including killing, torture and arbitrary detention," he added.

He said abuses attributed to Najib, some of them deadly, include the arrest and torture of children due to "political writings on walls", involvement in "suppressing protests with excessive force" and "opening direct fire" on a peaceful sit-in at Daraa's Al-Omari mosque.
