Iran says Strait of Hormuz closed until further notice

Lebanon's National News Agency are reporting that the Israeli army conducted a "sweep" operation around the town of Haris with gunfire. No Injuries were reported.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards navy said early on Sunday it had closed the Strait of Hormuz until further notice after firing a warning shot at a vessel it said had attempted to transit along an unapproved route, state media reported.

A Palestinian man was injured after Israeli forces assaulted him at the al-Jalama checkpoint, north of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, Wafa reports.

The Palestinian was beaten and taken to hospital, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said.

Three Palestinians were injured after an Israeli settler attack in the town of Beita in Nablus.

Israeli settlers beat the three, and they were taken to the hospital.

The Israeli military is carrying out demolitions in Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, Al Jazeera's correspondents report.

The destruction is happening in the area that the Israeli army controls.

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, spoke by phone with the UAE’s Foreign Minister, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, regarding the latest regional developments.

Both parties spoke about efforts to “reduce escalation and promote security and stability in the region" - Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Oman and Iran have agreed to continue technical and political talks to reach an agreement on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz under international law, Oman’s state news agency said on X.

The statement said both states “held talks in Muscat regarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure its safety and freedom in light of the facts and implications arising from recent developments”.

The Israeli army dropped leaflets over the town of al-Mansouri in Tyre district, warning residents to stay away from the forces.

“Threatened area, stay away,” the leaflets read. “Any approach to Israeli army forces exposes you to danger, do not approach.”

A Lebanese official told AFP on Saturday that his country would take part in planned talks with Israel next week in Rome, after Beirut had previously conditioned participation on Israel withdrawing from certain areas it occupies in the south.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that "Lebanon will participate" without offering further details, as a US military delegation visited the country to discuss implementing a framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel.

President Donald Trump is suggesting he has left standing orders for the US military to destroy Iran "at levels they've never seen before" if Tehran follows through on its long-standing threats to kill him.

But the US government has no way to create an automatic, pre-authorised " dead man's switch" that would prompt immediate retaliation.

Instead, if Trump were killed, the transfer of power to his successor is governed by the 25th Amendment and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947. Vice President JD Vance instantaneously would become commander in chief and have authority for any retaliation.

Under such a scenario, Vance could do exactly what Trump called for, though there also is a chance he could decide not to follow his predecessor's orders, or offer a direct response in a different way.

"The US has, for a whole variety of reasons, never utilised a 'dead man's switch,'" said Garrett M. Graff, author of "Raven Rock: The Story of the US Government's Secret Plan to Save Itself -- While the Rest of Us Die."

A prominent Democratic US lawmaker from California, Ro Khanna, said Saturday he was "detained" by armed Israeli settlers along with other Americans during a visit to the Israeli-occupied West Bank -- and said the military was complicit in the incident.

"Israeli settlers, brandishing American made M4s, detained me & other Americans on my trip to Palestine," Khanna said in a post on X.

When the Israeli military arrived at the scene, he added, "they sided with the settlers & continued our detention. They made a huge mistake."

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and his Omani counterpart exchanged views on "appropriate mechanisms" for the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with Article 5 of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, Araqchi said on his Telegram channel on Saturday. 

Four Israeli settlers were arrested after a CNN media crew were reportedly attacked in Sinjil in the occupied West Bank, according to the Times of Israel.

The settlers allegedly obstructed and damaged the car and were detained by Israeli police. The officers found clubs and a knife in their vehicle.
