Iran says no final decision taken over US peace deal; Israel bombs Beirut

US President Donald Trump has told Israel to end its attacks across Lebanon after its strike in Beirut today threatened to derail the peace deal.

Iran has vowed to retaliate against the attack, which Israel said targeted a "Hezbollah command centre" in a southern suburb of the capital.

"This morning’s attack on Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran," Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.

"We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down," he said.

"There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel."

The Israeli military said it was preparing for a possible retaliatory attack "in the coming hours", after its strike on Beirut's southern suburbs earlier today.

"Following the IDF strike in Beirut ... the IDF is preparing for potential fire toward the territory of the state of Israel in the coming hours," the military said, without specifying from where the attack was expected.

US President Donald Trump is set to hold talks with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France next week, the Egyptian presidency said on Sunday.

In a statement, the presidency said Sisi is expected to hold a series of meetings with world leaders during the summit, "including a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump".

It added that Sisi's meetings would focus on "discussing ways to resolve international geopolitical crises and address their repercussions on trade, energy and supply chains".

The G7 summit will be one of the first major international gatherings since the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran in late February, upending the Middle East and widening transatlantic tensions.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the summit in the city of Evian on June 15-17, said that leaders from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates had been invited to discuss the Middle East war, according to the French presidency.

Iran's chief negotiator said on Sunday there was "no point" in peace talks with the United States, accusing it of failing to uphold its commitments and casting doubt on a deal that Donald Trump had insisted would be signed imminently.

The latest hurdle came hours after Israel - which launched the war alongside the US in February - said its military had carried out strikes targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah in Beirut's southern suburbs.

The US president had previously said a deal to end the war in the Middle East would be signed as early as Sunday and that the blockaded Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately, though Iran had offered a less concrete timeline.

"The Zionists' aggression against Dahieh once again showed that the United States either lacks the will to implement its commitments or lacks the ability to do so," Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on X, referring to the suburbs.

"If you do not have the will or the ability to fulfil your commitments, then there is no point in talking about continuing down this path."

At least four Palestinians have been killed and others wounded in an Israeli attack in northern Gaza, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa.

The attack took place near Yemen Al-Saeed Hospital in Jabalia refugee camp.

A senior Iranian military official warned on Sunday that Israel's strike on Beirut's southern suburbs would not go "unanswered" by Tehran, according to local media.

"Without a doubt, these crimes will not go unanswered," Brigadier General Mohammad Jafar Asadi, deputy commander of Iran's highest military command, told Defa Press news agency following the attack.

Lebanon's civil defence agency said the Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday killed at least three people.

The civil defence statement said that "the bodies of three martyrs were recovered from under the rubble and six wounded" were taken to hospital after the strike, which hit the Ghobeiry area of the capital.

The number of people killed in Israel's assault on Gaza since October 2023 has surpassed 73,000, the Gaza health ministry said on Sunday.

The updated toll on Sunday came as Israel has continued to strike in violation of a "ceasefire" that was supposed to have been observed since October.

Confirmation came from Zaher al-Waheidi, head of the ministry’s records department, and Hamza Salem from the ministry’s public relations department.

The total number of deaths since the beginning of the war is now 73,001.

On Sunday, the ministry said, there were five deaths: two in the southern city of Khan Younis and one in central Gaza, in addition to two who died of earlier wounds.

Israel has continued daily attacks on Gaza despite a "ceasefire" that was supposed to come into force in October.

Israeli attacks have killed at least 986 people and wounded another 3,138 in the eight months since the truce was agreed.

Lebanon's foreign ministry said it had lodged a complaint with the United Nations over Israel's alleged spraying of herbicide glyphosate in Lebanese territory near the border earlier this year.

In a statement circulated on Sunday, the ministry said it had sent a letter to the UN Security Council and the UN secretary-general this week to complain about the incident, which occurred in February, a month before the latest Israel-Hezbollah war erupted on 2 March.

The ministry said "laboratory tests and chemical analyses carried out on soil samples" in the south Lebanon border villages of Aita al-Shaab, Ras Naqura and Dhayra "confirmed the use of glyphosate at high levels of concentration".

It said the levels "greatly exceed" those usually found in agricultural areas after regular use by farmers.

The statement said the complaint was based on a report from Lebanon's government-linked National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS).

At the time, the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon said Israel had notified it of its plans to spray a "non-toxic chemical substance" near the border and had warned peacekeepers to take shelter.

Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun had denounced the spraying as a "flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and a crime against the environment and health".

Hundreds of demonstrators have gathered in London to protest an Israeli event marketing properties in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Police made a number of arrests at the protest, which occurred near a synagogue in Edgware where the "Great Israeli Real Estate Event" is being held. 

The event attracted significant public opposition, with human rights organisations, legal experts and hundreds of MPs calling for its cancellation.

One person was killed and four others injured in the Israeli strike in Beirut, Lebanon's National News Agency is reporting.

The Israeli military says it struck a Hezbollah "command centre" in southern Beirut.

A strike on an apartment building in the Ghobeiry suburb occurred within the last half hour.

The military said it came in response to Hezbollah drone fire into Israel earlier today.

The Israeli military has bombed several Hezbollah targets in southern Beirut, Prime ⁠Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ⁠and Defence Minister Israel Katz have announced in a joint statement.

The ⁠statement said the attack was in ⁠response to Hezbollah’s firing of several drones into northern Israel earlier this morning.

Lebanon's state-run news agency said the strike targeted an apartment building in the southern suburb of Ghobeiry.

Iran has warned that targeting Beirut is a red line and responded by firing a barrage of missiles at Israel following a similar attack earlier this month.

The attack comes amid speculation of an imminent peace agreement between Iran and the US.

A senior Iranian official has told Reuters a final draft of the memorandum of understanding includes the release of $25 billion of frozen Iranian assets and an agreement to allow Tehran to dilute its uranium stockpile inside Iran.

The memorandum would also see the US waive oil sanctions and lift its blockade on Iranian ports, the official said.

In return, Iran would immediately re-open the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial ships.

A final agreement over Iran's nuclear enrichment and the fate of its uranium stockpile would be negotiated within 60 days after the memorandum is agreed. Tehran has agreed to not further enrich uranium or expand its nuclear facilities during the period.

The Israeli military has launched new airstrikes across southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon's state-run news agency.

The National News Agency reported raids in towns in the districts of Tyre, Bint Jbeil, Nabatieh and Jezzine on Sunday morning.

Israel earlier ordered residents of almost 30 villages in the south to flee ahead of impending strikes.

A cyberattack disrupted services at four major Iranian banks, though no customer data was compromised, the country's banking coordination council said on Sunday, according to state media.

The council said the attack targeted a shared communications infrastructure used by Bank Melli, Bank Tejarat, Bank Saderat and the Export Development Bank of Iran, prompting technical teams to implement protective measures and temporarily affecting some banking services.

It said no unauthorized access to customer information had occurred and no data had been deleted, adding that recovery efforts were underway to restore normal operations.

Iran is yet to take a final decision on the draft ceasefire agreement with the US, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency has said, citing a source close to the negotiating team.

Negotiators are continuing to review aspects of the deal, according to the report.

A Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on Sunday as part of the mediation process to end the months-long war between Iran and the United States, Iranian media said.

Iran's ISNA news agency reported that an adviser to Qatar's foreign minister had been dispatched to the Islamic republic, while another Iranian news agency Tasnim said the purpose of the visit was to "go over the latest developments regarding the diplomatic process".

The Israeli military has ordered residents of 29 villages in southern Lebanon to flee ahead of planned strikes, despite a ceasefire intended to halt the war with Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The military's Arabic-language spokesman issued two successive warnings telling people in 25 villages in Nabatieh district and four in Sidon to immediately flee north of the Zahrani river.

The second warning targeted towns north of the Zahrani river.

Two far-right Israeli ministers on Sunday called for strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs in retaliation to the Hezbollah drone attack.

"The shooting at northern communities is a test of the Dahiyeh Doctrine that the prime minister declared. I call on him to implement it decisively and firmly, and to bring down buildings in Dahiyeh," Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on X.

"For every drone - a missile; for every violation - fire; for every UAV -- Dahiyeh must tremble," wrote National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir on X.

Israeli officials have vowed to strike Dahiyeh should Hezbollah launch cross-border attacks, a position they say has the backing of Washington.

An Israeli attack on Beirut would threaten to derail ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran. Tehran fired a barrage of missiles into Israel earlier this month following strikes in Beirut, which it says is a red line.

The Israeli military said two drones, suspected to have been launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon, struck northern Israel on Sunday but caused no casualties.

"Two impacts of suspicious aerial targets in Israeli territory were identified near the Israel-Lebanon border. No injuries were reported," the military said.
