Iran says its ambassador met four nationals under detention in Kuwait

Iran's ambassador to Kuwait met four Iranian nationals who have been detained in Kuwait for three months, a few days after an Iranian military official accused Kuwait of withholding information about their fate.

The Iranian Embassy in Kuwait announced on a post on X today, Wednesday, that the Iranian Ambassador, Mohammad Totonji, met with four Iranian nationals detained in Kuwait and was informed of their safety and the latest developments in their situation.

The embassy added, according to what was reported by the Fars agency, that after follow-ups and coordination made with the assistance of the Kuwaiti Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior, Totonji was able to meet with the four nationals who had been arrested in Kuwait three months ago, where he checked on their health status and the latest developments in their case.

Iran claimed in May that four men affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards had been on a maritime patrol before entering Kuwaiti territorial waters because of a navigation disruption. Kuwait has said the four were suspected of planning hostile actions against the country.

On the other hand, Kuwait reported that the group intended to infiltrate Bubyan Island, the largest Kuwaiti island, to carry out hostile actions.

The Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported at the time that the four attempted to enter the country on 1 May on board a fishing boat, and clashed with Kuwaiti soldiers, which led to the injury of one soldier and the escape of two of the infiltrators.

According to a statement issued by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior, the detainees are: Naval Colonel Amir Hussein Abdul Muhammad Zaraei, Naval Colonel Abdul Samad Yadallah Kanawati, Naval Captain Ahmed Jamshid Gholam Reda Zulfiqar, and First Lieutenant Berri Muhammad Hussein Sohrab Foroughi Rad.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior also claimed that the four detainees "confessed" that they were sent by the IRGC to infiltrate Kuwait.

Mohammad Baqerzadeh, commander of the Committee for the Search for Missing Persons of Iran's Armed Forces General Staff, accused Kuwait on Monday of withholding information about the fate of the four men.
