Iran's chief negotiator and parliament speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf has welcomed China's response to the US' "D-Day" economic sanctions.

"We welcome China’s principled statement rejecting illegal sanctions against Iran," he wrote in a post on X on Wednesday.

"The Iran-China comprehensive strategic partnership is rooted in mutual respect, win-win cooperation, and a shared vision for a multipolar world. This relationship needs no one’s permission," he said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has sent a letter to the UN secretary-general and Security Council condemning what he describes as “state and economic terrorism” being waged by the US.

In the letter, Araghchi called on the international community to oppose the Trump administration's "illegal and criminal action".

Earlier this week the Trump administration announced what it called the "toughest sanctions in history" which it said were designed to completely isolate the Iranian economy.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani will visit Tehran on Thursday where he will meet a number of Iranian officials to discuss ways to de-escalate tensions, foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said on Wednesday on X.

The Trump-backed Board of Peace is failing to protect Palestinian civilians in Gaza and helping to entrench Israel's illegal occupation of the territory, Athena Rayburn, the head of the Association of International Development Agencies (AIDA), told the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

AIDA is an umbrella organisation representing more than 100 aid groups working in occupied Palestine.

In a statement to the 15-member council, she said that preventing a famine in Gaza is "not a cause for celebration" and that success should be measured by protecting civilians and ending Israel's occupation.

"By these basic measures, the Board of Peace is failing," she said.

"The Board of Peace has not only done nothing to wrest control of the Gaza Strip from the State of Israel, but has also so far functioned to further entrench Israel's unlawful presence," she continued.

"The rights of Palestinians in Gaza have been made subordinate to the far-reaching, capricious and arbitrary requirements of its occupier."

Iran's armed forces said Wednesday that several Persian-language media outlets operating abroad were included in its "military target bank", accusing them of working for US and Israeli intelligence agencies.

In remarks published on state television, armed forces spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi named BBC Persian, Iran International and Radio Farda among the outlets.

"These hostile media outlets are the soldiers of Zionism and America and are included in our military target bank," Shekarchi said, accusing them of being "directly connected to Mossad, CIA and enemy intelligence organisations."

"The Iranian Armed Forces do not view these news outlets as media," he added.

Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori has condemned a US decision on Wednesday to sanction the organisation as a "terrorist organisation".

"As a Palestinian and Iraqi, the fact the country which destroyed both my homelands is calling me a terrorist, is beyond hypocritical," she wrote on X, calling Trump "the antithesis to everything Palestine Action stands for".

• Iranian officials claim Oman has agreed to an interim deal over the Strait of Hormuz that would see ships transit through Iran's territorial waters.
