An Iranian state news anchor has become one of the defining images of the first four days of the war between Israel and Iran.

Sahar Emami - one of the country's most prominent newsreaders – was presenting live on-air on Monday when Israeli warplanes bombed the headquarters of Iran's state broadcaster IRIB.

Footage captured the sound of the blasts as missiles struck the building and showed smoke filling the studio as the lights went out.

Emami, who was shown leaving the studio following the explosions, resumed her broadcast shortly after the attack, earning praise from social media users for her bravery.

A broadcast by a bloodied IRIB journalist outside the building showed the entire structure on fire.

The broadcaster said at least one person was killed in the attack.

Supporters of the government took to social media to share memes and videos of the newsreader, casting her as a hero and symbol of defiance in the face of Israel's aggression.

A large banner of Emami was erected in a major square in downtown Tehran.

Pro-government online influencers drew attention to her raised finger and described her as an Iranian "lioness".

Others shared images of her pictured alongside other so-called "Axis of Resistance" leaders such as Hassan Nasrallah, Yahya Sinwar, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Abdul-Malik al-Houthi.

Iran's foreign ministry condemned the attack as a war crime and called on the UN Security Council to "act now to stop the genocidal aggressor".

Israel defended targeting the building, describing the broadcaster as the "communications centre of the Iranian regime, which served Iran's armed forces".

In a statement the IRIB said: "The Zionist entity ruthlessly bombed the state media headquarters in Tehran. The enemy seeks to silence the voice of the noble Iranian people by targeting the news channel."

Iran's allies also expressed outrage at the attack. Hezbollah described it as a "heinous Zionist crime" and "systematic terrorism" while Yemen's Houthi rebel group called it "a desperate attempt to obscure the facts and silence free voices".
