Iran and Israel exchange fire as Trump calls for restraint

For the third consecutive day, Palestinian factions and mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey have met in Cairo to address growing disagreements over Gaza's future, especially regarding resistance groups' weapons and governance during the post-war period.

Participants describe the talks as highly sensitive since last October's ceasefire, which aims to break the deadlock in the deal's second phase.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday said Tehran remained at the negotiating table after halting attacks on Israel following the first exchange of fire since the April ceasefire.

"Diplomacy and defence are the two wings of national power; we have neither left the battlefield nor the negotiating table," Pezeshkian said in a post on X, adding that Tehran "will not retreat in the face of any threat".

Lebanese media reports that Israeli strikes were carried out in the villages of Chraib and Baraachit in the south of the country.

Not long after, Israeli media reports sirens warning of rocket fire from Lebanon sound in Kiryat Shmona settlement and the surrounding towns of northern pre-1948 Palestine.

Meanwhile, Israel has halted strikes on Iran at the request of US President Donald Trump, a senior Israeli official was cited as saying by the Israeli media.

The official added that if Hezbollah attacks persist, Israel will attack the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Citing the senior Israeli official, the report also said that Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon would continue at full strength in the coming days. 

According to Israeli media, following a phone call that took place in the past hour between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the latter is 'considering' stopping the next planned attacks on Iran.

Sources say Netanyahu will soon decide to order the Israeli army to halt all plans prepared for evening and nighttime strikes, which were supposed to be far more significant attacks, and that, in practice, President Trump – once again – decided on Israel's behalf how the war will continue. 

The EU on Monday imposed sanctions on the spokesman for the naval arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and a regional command over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Europe has been left on the sidelines as the US war with Iran has shuttered the key waterway and roiled global markets.

The 27-nation bloc said it was blacklisting Mohammad Akbarzadeh, spokesperson for the Guards' naval wing, and the organisation's Hormozgan Provincial Command.

It also said it was placing Hamid Hosseini, a representative of Iran's oil exporters union, under an asset freeze and visa ban.

European nations, spearheaded by France and Britain, are working on plans to send a naval mission to Hormuz once the fighting stops.

EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas has said the bloc's naval mission, currently in the Red Sea, could take part in the operation.

Iranian armed forces announced the "end of military operations" against Israel but warned of "harsher" attacks if Israel resumes strikes on Lebanon, the semi-official Fars news agency reports.

Israel has carried out nearly 3,500 air strikes on Lebanon and hundreds of controlled explosions since the US announced an alleged ceasefire for the country on 16 April, Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said on Monday.

The US-brokered ceasefire came into effect just after midnight on 17 April, with Israeli troops still positioned deep inside southern Lebanon. 

In comments published by his office on X after a cabinet meeting, Salam said that from April 17 to June 7, Israel had carried out 3,491 air strikes, 407 controlled demolitions and six "razing" operations, or demolitions, which have left some entire villages in the southernmost strip of Lebanon entirely flattened.

Salam said Lebanon was striving to uphold the ceasefire but that the latest escalation between Iran and Israel had caused additional waves of displacement, straining Lebanon's ability to host fleeing families.

Already, more than 1 million people, a fifth of Lebanon's population, have been displaced by Israel's strikes and forced evacuation orders across Lebanon.

Israel has also killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon since 2 March.

Israel's genocidal war on the Palestinian enclave has killed 72,980 people, with 173,171 people wounded since October 2023.

In its latest update, Gaza’s Health Ministry said hospitals across the Strip received 9 corpses and 43 injured people over the past day.

Since the so-called 'ceasefire' in October 2025, Israeli attacks have killed 970 Palestinians and wounded 3,063 others, it said.

Lebanese Information Minister Paul Morcos announced that Israel killed at least 29 army members.

The toll since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah renewed on 2 March includes three police, one member of the general security directorate, and 13 state security members.

The announcement comes days after an Israeli air strike killed three members of the Lebanese army, including a brigadier general and a captain.

A total of 3,613 Lebanese people have been killed since 2 March alone. 

US President Donald Trump has just posted on the right-wing social media platform TruthSocial that "Israel and Iran must immediately stop the 'firing.'"

While Iran seeks to end the war, deadlocked talks and the renewed threat of conflict could push Tehran to deploy previously untapped leverage: the Bab al-Mandab. 

And it seems that has happened with this morning's announcement by the Houthis.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Monday they had targeted a petrochemical facility in Israel in retaliation for an attack on a similar site in southwestern Iran.

"The Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in response to the aggression of the American-Zionist enemy against a petrochemical industry facility, targeted similar industrial facilities in Haifa with missile strikes a few moments ago," the Guards' official media outlet Sepah News said.

They also warned that Israel "has initiated a dangerous game, the scope of which will encompass all energy-related targets in the region", blaming the US for any consequences for the global economy.

The Israeli military says it is prepared for at least a few more days of fighting against Iran, and potentially a full resumption of the war.

Israel's army believes that the fighting will continue for several days, but says it is also ready for a lengthy conflict.

The military says the strikes are only being carried out by Israel, but there is "full coordination" with US Central Command. The American military has also participated in the interception of missiles fired by Iran at Israel.

Meanwhile, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has spoken with his counterpart, CENTCOM chief Adm. Brad Cooper, three times, according to the Israeli military.

The Israeli military said Monday it had struck and dismantled Iranian defence systems deployed across several areas in the country.

"Recently, defence systems were deployed in numerous areas across Iran as part of the regime's efforts to restore its detection and defence capabilities, which were degraded during Operation Roaring Lion," the military said.

"The strike led to the dismantling of these systems," it said, adding that dozens of warplanes participated in the operation.

Meanwhile, Iranian media claimed the downing of a drone over Tehran.

A drone of the "US-Zionist enemy" was targeted and destroyed by air defence in the skies of Tehran, according to the Mehr news agency.

Sounds of explosions were also heard in the city of Isfahan, the agency also said.

Iranian judiciary says it launched legal proceedings against 3,121 people for "cooperating with the enemy".

Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir was quoted as saying by Iranian media that those under prosecution are "traitors to the homeland and mercenaries" who collaborated with the US and Israel.

Jahangir said 2,406 individuals have been arrested and remain in custody, and about 1,000 indictments have been issued so far.

Iran said Monday that Pakistan's mediation efforts to end the war with the United States were continuing even after fighting resumed with Israel.

"Diplomatic consultations are naturally continuing in all circumstances," said Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei.

China said it was "deeply concerned" on Monday by fresh attacks between Israel and Iran, expressing hope that a fragile truce in the US-Israeli war on Iran would be respected.

"Resuming hostilities is not in any party's interest," foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a news briefing, adding: "It is hoped all relevant parties will fulfil their commitment to a ceasefire."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in his weekly press conference, "The exchange of messages with Washington has so far taken place in an atmosphere of mistrust, and last night's attacks deepened that."

"Israeli attacks on Iran occur in full coordination with America and Central Command—Centcom," he added.

Iran's Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran and the Kermanshah International Airport in the western parts of the country have announced the cancellation of all flights "until further notice".

The announcements follow attacks by Israel this morning targeting Tehran, Isfahan, and Tabriz.

Iranian media on Monday said Israel had struck a petrochemical company in southwestern Iran, as the warring countries traded fire hours after US President Donald Trump called for restraint.

"The Zionist enemy has carried out an air attack on the Karun Petrochemical Company in Mahshahr," local media posted on Telegram.

It quoted a local law enforcement official as saying that Israeli projectiles struck the facility.

State news agency IRNA reported that the special petrochemical economic zone, which hosts the company, had evacuated "its daytime employees... following an aerial attack by the hostile Zionist enemy".

Karoon Petrochemical Company was founded in 2002-2003 as Iran's first "knowledge-based" petrochemical company.

It produces more than 200,000 tonnes of petrochemical products annually, according to the figures published on its website.

Israel and Iran traded fire hours after US President Donald Trump called on Israel to refrain from retaliating against Tehran's missiles.

Iran has reportedly shot more missiles towards central and northern Israel, with impact expected within minutes. 

On Monday, the Coordinator of Israeli Government Activities in the Territories (the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip) announced a series of security measures in the wake of the Iranian missile attack on Israel, including the closure of the crossings leading to the Gaza Strip, such as the Kerem Shalom and Rafah crossings, "until further notice." 

The coordinator claimed that closing the crossings "will not affect the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip," which relies mainly on these two crossings for the entry of aid amid a worsening, disastrous humanitarian situation after three years of genocidal war and two decades of an illegal Israeli siege.

Iran said earlier in the morning it struck Israel’s Nevatim and Tel Nof air bases, as the two sides trade fire.

"The operation was carried out in response to a missile attack launched by the Zionist regime… against several radar sites in three different places" in Iran, the Revolutionary Guards declared in a statement.

⁠Yemen's Houthi group, allied with Iran, ⁠⁠says ⁠⁠that it will ban Israeli maritime navigation in the Red ⁠⁠Sea, with Israel-affiliated vessels a target once again.

They also ⁠⁠said in ⁠⁠a statement ⁠⁠that ⁠⁠they had attacked ‌‌Israel, and they will respond to escalation with escalation.
