Iran waits for US response to peace proposals as Trump denies making concessions
Iran put forward ideas for reaching a new peace agreement with the US through Qatari mediators, Iranian state media reported on Monday, while US President Donald Trump denied reports that he had offered Tehran concessions to end the war.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is currently in New York, where he has discussed a number of ideas with Qatari mediators to be presented to the US. He denied reports that Tehran had shown flexibility on the nuclear issue.
On Tuesday, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said efforts were still underway to arrange meetings between the US and Iran.
“We are carrying messages between the parties to build common ground,” he said.
Al-Ansari, however, warned against Iranian threats to target infrastructure in Gulf countries, saying: “Iranian attacks on our countries are unjustified aggression, and we did not choose to be a party to this war.”
He added that “any threat to infrastructure is a violation of the principles of international law and good-neighbourly relations.”
Araghchi said a seven-point plan had been conveyed to the US through Qatari mediators, adding that Iran was still waiting for an official response despite Trump’s statements.
Following a report by Axios that Trump was prepared to ease sanctions on Iran and release frozen funds in exchange for concrete steps regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, the US president angrily denied the claim.
“This is untrue. I offered them NOTHING,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform on Monday.
Araghchi added that Iranian officials met one of the Qatari mediators on Monday and discussed ideas for paving the way towards implementing Iran’s conditions. He said the mediators would present the ideas to the US side before conveying Washington’s final response to Tehran.
Araghchi expressed hope that the US response would arrive on Tuesday, adding that he would leave New York for Tehran within hours and that Qatari mediators would know how to deliver the response as soon as they received it.
The Iranian foreign minister added that Iran’s position on its nuclear programme remained unchanged and that Tehran had shown no flexibility on the issue.
He said the current discussions were limited to the Strait of Hormuz and that the strategic waterway would only be reopened if a series of conditions communicated by Iran were met.
According to officials who spoke to the Associated Press, the proposal currently under discussion involves reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports, followed by the lifting of sanctions on Iran.
A draft of the agreement indicates that the strait would be reopened under a separate understanding discussed between Iran and Oman, with no fees imposed on ships. The agreement would temporarily regulate the movement of vessels through the strategic waterway.
