Yemen's Houthis announced on Monday that they had struck a US carrier operating in the region as Washington said it would continue conducting airstrikes against the group until it ceases attacks on some international shipping.

On Monday the Houthis said they attacked the USS Harry Truman and its accompanying naval vessels with a barrage of missiles and drones following Sunday's deadly US strikes against the group that killed 53. The US has yet to comment on the claims.

The escalation in the Red Sea comes following a Houthi announcement that it would resume a blockade of shipping in the Red Sea over Israel's blockade on Gaza.

The blockade, ongoing since 2 March, has resumed a humanitarian crisis in the enclave, with UNICEF warning that over a million children are without basic necessities in the enclave.

Alongside the blockade, Israeli strikes on the enclave have also continued, with Palestinian news agency WAFA reporting that one person was killed in Israeli shelling south of Gaza City.

Mahmoud Khalil’s legal team has filed a motion seeking his immediate release after his arrest for participating in pro-Palestine protests at Columbia University. The arrest has faced widespread condemnation from civil liberties organizations, and independent UN experts have condemned the "arbitrary detention" of the US permanent resident.

The motion argues that Khalil should be released to be with his wife, who is eight months pregnant. It also challenges the Trump administration’s use of a provision from the 1953 Immigration and Nationality Act to justify Khalil's potential deportation.

Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, described Khalil’s continued detention as "unconscionable" and that he has not been accused of any crime.

"The Trump administration has no right to incarcerate Mr. Khalil – this is an extreme, retaliatory, and targeted attack on the First Amendment and his right to due process," Lieberman said.
