A drone launched by Yemen's Houthi rebels struck Israel's Ramon Airport in the southern Negev (Naqab) Desert on Sunday, injuring eight Israelis.

The Israeli military said it had intercepted three other drones shortly after air raid sirens sounded in the Nitzana area of the Negev.

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority said a drone had struck the passenger terminal at Ramona Airport, with video circulated by Israeli media showing a helicopter pursuing another drone before explosions were heard.

The army later conceded that it had failed to intercept the fourth drone that hit the airport.

Israel's airports authority announced that airspace over the airport was closed to air traffic, before being reopened aroun two hours later.

The Houthis have escalated their attacks on Israel following Israel's recent attack on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, which killed the group's prime minister and several other ministers.

According to Israel's Army Radio, the Houthis have launched at least eight ballistic missiles and several drones since the killing of Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi earlier this week.

The Houthis began attacking Israeli-linked shipping in November 2023, in response to the genocide in Gaza.

The group later escalated their attacks by launching ballistic missiles directly at Israel, prompting Tel Aviv to target civilian and military infrastructure in Yemen.

Last week, the rebel group announced that it had targeted an Israeli oil tanker in the northern Red Sea "in support of the oppressed Palestinian people and in response to the crimes of genocide and starvation perpetrated" by Israel.
