Doctor commits suicide after carrying out New York hospital shooting
One doctor was killed and at least six other wounded on Friday when a doctor went on a shooting spree with an assault rifle at a hospital in New York, officials said.
The gunman was wearing a white lab coat, after reportedly killing himself, after shooting a number of medical staff, police said.
The assailant, identified by police as Henry Bello, is listed on the hospital's website as working in family medicine.
Bello also reportedly tried to set fire to himself, setting off the hospital's alarm system.
All of the victims - five of whom were seriously injured - were discovered on the 16th and 17th floors of the medical centre.
One doctor was treated by people in the hospital who had tied a fire hose pipe around his wounds to stem his bleeding.
Police discovered the body of the dead gunman on the 17th floor, where he was still dressed in his white lab coat and carrying ID.
The body of a woman was recovered from nearby to where the assailant lay dead. Police have not yet released the identification of this victim.
The FBI said they are not treating the shooting as an act of terror. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described the shooting as an act of work-related violence.
